Selena Gomez teared up after Miranda Hart told her that Selena Gomez: My Mind & Me helped Hart find the courage to speak about her own illness and keep writing. The moment, on The Graham Norton Show, was a personal response to Hart’s thanks—not a statement about medical treatment or outcomes.
What Miranda Hart said to Selena Gomez
Hart told Gomez she had watched Gomez’s documentary and that its openness had encouraged her to share her own feelings about illness. PA Wire, in a report published by The Standard, quoted Hart saying: “I watched Selena’s documentary (My Mind And Me) and it gave me the courage to be vulnerable and share my feelings about my disease. It kept me writing.”
The exchange took place during an episode of The Graham Norton Show featuring both women. The BBC’s official clip description summarizes Hart’s thanks, while The Independent’s coverage reports that Gomez teared up as Hart spoke.
Why Gomez teared up
The reporting documents Gomez’s visible reaction as Hart described the effect the documentary had on her. Hart was thanking Gomez for making her own experience public in a way that helped Hart feel able to talk about hers. That context explains why the moment was moving, but it does not establish a more specific private reason for Gomez’s tears than the accounts report.

Which documentary Hart was referring to
Hart meant Selena Gomez: My Mind & Me, the documentary Apple says was released on November 4, 2022. Apple describes the film as following an intimate six-year journey in Gomez’s life. Hart’s remark focused on the courage she drew from watching it; it was not a claim that Gomez’s experience and Hart’s were medically the same.
How Hart connected the moment to her memoir
Hart’s remarks were connected to her memoir, I Haven’t Been Entirely Honest with You, in which she writes about illness and how she sought to live with joy and meaning. In the same PA Wire report for The Standard, Hart described the book this way: “The book is not just about illness; it is about how I learnt to live well and free with joy and meaning despite my circumstances. I now feel I can be in the world as me. I feel fully free, if not fully recovered.”
