Asked about the project in a November 2024 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Gomez said, “That’s still happening, though I’m not sure when.” She also said she had met Ronstadt and read two books about her. That is the clearest on-record status update in the available reporting; it does not confirm that production has started.
What is known about the biopic?
Producers named in 2024 reporting
The Los Angeles Times reported that James Keach and Ronstadt’s manager, John Boylan, were attached as producers. At the time, the newspaper said no director, additional cast members, or distributor had been announced. Those details describe the project as reported in January 2024, not necessarily its present status.

Director and production status remain unconfirmed
IMDb lists David O. Russell as director and labels the project “pre-production.” That is a database listing, not an official announcement from the filmmakers or a distributor, so it should not be treated as confirmation. No reliable, authoritative production update or release announcement was located through October 8, 2026.
When will the Selena Gomez Linda Ronstadt biopic come out?
No release date is established by the available sources. Gomez’s November 2024 comment leaves the timing open, and the sources reviewed do not confirm a filming start, distributor, or release plan. A date should be treated as unconfirmed unless announced by the production, a distributor, or an on-record representative.

Why did the project draw attention?
In January 2024, Gomez shared an image of Ronstadt’s memoir Simple Dreams: A Musical Memoir on Instagram Story shortly before the casting report. Ronstadt then acknowledged the report. The book is relevant background on Ronstadt, but the available reporting does not establish that the film is an adaptation of the memoir.
The Los Angeles Times described Ronstadt as an 11-time Grammy Award winner. For readers who want to explore her story while the film’s status remains uncertain, Simple Dreams: A Musical Memoir is a first-person account by Ronstadt.
