They return as Eleven, Mike Wheeler, Dustin Henderson, Lucas Sinclair, Will Byers, Joyce Byers, and Jim Hopper. The final-season ensemble also includes actors whose characters joined later, as well as newcomers announced for Season 5.
Which actors connect Season 1 to Season 5?
Netflix’s Season 1 recap establishes the original story around Will’s disappearance, Eleven’s arrival, and the search led by Will’s friends and family and police chief Hopper. Netflix’s Season 5 cast guide pairs these principal performers and characters across the series:
| Actor | Character | Season 1 connection | Season 5 connection |
|---|---|---|---|
| Millie Bobby Brown | Eleven | Part of the original central group | Returns as Eleven |
| Finn Wolfhard | Mike Wheeler | Part of the original group of Will’s friends | Returns as Mike |
| Gaten Matarazzo | Dustin Henderson | Part of Will’s original group of friends | Returns as Dustin |
| Caleb McLaughlin | Lucas Sinclair | Part of Will’s original group of friends | Returns as Lucas |
| Noah Schnapp | Will Byers | The boy whose disappearance sets the story in motion | Returns as Will |
| Winona Ryder | Joyce Byers | Will’s mother, central to the search | Returns as Joyce |
| David Harbour | Jim Hopper | Hawkins police chief who joins the search | Returns as Hopper |
This is a focused comparison of the central cast, not a complete credit list for either season.
Which familiar Season 5 characters were not part of the original group?
Several recognizable characters belong to later phases of the story rather than the Season 1 ensemble. Netflix’s cast guide identifies performers including:

Season 1: a search in Hawkins
The first season begins on Nov. 6, 1983, when Will Byers disappears and Eleven escapes Hawkins National Laboratory. Joyce, Will’s friends, and Hopper search for him, uncovering the lab’s secrets and the Upside Down. The original ensemble is organized around that search, with the children’s story and the adults’ investigation unfolding together.

Season 5: the final fight
Netflix’s cast guide, published Dec. 4, 2025, places Season 5 in fall 1987. Hawkins is under lockdown after the Rifts opened, and the heroes unite to find and kill Vecna. Series co-creator Ross Duffer described its opening condition this way: “I think what’s unique about this season is that it starts a little bit in chaos because our heroes ultimately lost at the end of Season 4.”
The Netflix Media Center describes Season 5 as the fifth and final season. Netflix’s announced release plan was four episodes on Nov. 26, three on Christmas, and the finale on New Year’s Eve, each at 5 p.m. PT. That is a historical schedule announcement, not confirmation of current streaming availability.
