Why Roy Cohn is at the center of the story
The film’s official description frames Trump’s ascent through what it calls a “Faustian deal” with Cohn, an influential lawyer and political fixer. The film credits Gabriel Sherman as writer and Ali Abbasi as director. The official film page gives that premise.
That emphasis is deliberate. In an Associated Press report from Cannes on May 20, 2024, Abbasi said, “This is not a biopic of Donald Trump,” explaining that the filmmakers were interested in telling “a very specific story through his relationship with Roy and Roy’s relationship with him.” The AP’s Cannes report describes the film as inspired by true events and centered on Cohn’s mentorship of a young Trump.

How to read the comparisons
The cast pairings and biographical details identify whom the actors portray and why those figures matter to the story. They do not establish an objective ranking of physical likeness or acting accuracy. Stan’s prosthetics and wig are reported details of the portrayal; whether the result is convincing is a matter of judgment, not a settled historical fact.
Nor should the film’s scenes be treated as a documentary record. Its stated focus is a particular relationship and period, rather than every detail of Trump’s life. The AP’s Cannes report also notes that Ivana Trump made an allegation in a 1990 divorce deposition that Trump denied; she later said she did not mean her words literally or criminally. That sensitive, disputed episode should be understood with that context rather than treated as an uncontested fact.

What the actors and director have said
Jeremy Strong told the Associated Press that Cohn was “probably the single most fascinating person I’ve ever studied and interrogated and attempted to inhabit.” Abbasi said of Stan’s performance, “I still don’t know exactly how he did it.” These are the actor’s and director’s interview remarks, not independent evidence that the film is historically accurate. The AP interview reports both comments.
