House of Guinness casts Anthony Boyle as Arthur, Louis Partridge as Edward, Emily Fairn as Anne Plunket, and Fionn O’Shea as Benjamin Guinness. Netflix connects all four characters to real children of Sir Benjamin Guinness—but the series is historical fiction, not a documentary.

Who plays the central Guinness family members?

Netflix’s official cast guide identifies the four central siblings and their actors. Their family connections are historical; the personalities and situations shown on screen are dramatized.

Actor Character Real family connection What to treat as dramatization
Anthony Boyle Arthur Guinness Inspired by Arthur, a son of Sir Benjamin Guinness. Netflix describes the screen Arthur as the eldest brother, Eton-educated, and based in London. Those details describe the character; the cast guide alone does not establish them as a complete account of the historical Arthur.
Louis Partridge Edward Guinness Inspired by Edward, whom Netflix identifies as Sir Benjamin’s third son. The show presents Edward as business-focused and ambitious; those are characterizations, not evidence of his historical personality.
Emily Fairn Anne Plunket Inspired by Anne Guinness, Sir Benjamin’s only daughter. The series depicts Anne as married and physically frail. The Irish Times says her charitable work and health problems have historical grounding, while stressing that the drama is fictionalized.
Fionn O’Shea Benjamin “Ben” Guinness Inspired by Benjamin Guinness, whom Netflix identifies as Sir Arthur’s second son. The show’s portrayal of addiction and depression should not be taken as fact. Historian Dr Kevin Egan told the Irish Times that Benjamin had a gambling problem, not an alcohol addiction, and was not depressive.

Which real people and events shape the story?

Netflix describes the series as a story set in nineteenth-century Dublin and New York. It begins after Sir Benjamin Guinness’s death, when the terms of his will affect his four adult children. The family relationships at its center are real, but that premise does not make each scene or conflict a historical record.

Creator Steven Knight described the process of dramatization this way: “I had to take the things the family said and did — the achievements and mistakes they made — and use them as stepping stones to try to fill in the gaps.” In other words, documented facts informed the drama, while gaps were used as room for storytelling.

How accurate is House of Guinness?

The distinction to keep in mind is between a character’s identity and the events or traits the series assigns to that character. Netflix’s guide establishes the four siblings’ real family connections. Specific claims about behavior or the will need separate historical support.

In its report on the series, The Irish Times spoke with Guinness heir Edward Guinness, 4th Earl of Iveagh, and historian Dr Kevin Egan. The Earl said the siblings receive more emphasis in the series than they did in real life and that it “makes no ambition at relating to purely fact.” Those are his assessments of the drama, not a claim that every scene is inaccurate.

Rank #2

Egan challenged the series’ depiction of Benjamin’s alcohol addiction and depression, saying the historical Benjamin had a gambling problem and was not depressive. He also said Anne and Benjamin were well provided for in the will. On one point, Egan said the drama was grounded in fact: the will made it difficult to break the business partnership between Arthur and Edward.

What about the supporting characters?

Netflix identifies Sean Rafferty, played by James Norton, as a brewery foreman and says Aunt Agnes was inspired by a real aunt of the same name. That does not establish that every supporting character has a historical counterpart—or that every character without an identified counterpart was invented. Treat those cases individually rather than assuming the whole cast maps neatly onto historical people.

Where can you read more about the family?

For a family-history perspective, Edward Guinness, 4th Earl of Iveagh, wrote Guinness: A Family Succession. The Irish Times reports that he drew on family papers, correspondence, and Guinness Storehouse archives.
