Phish opened its October 25, 2024, concert at MVP Arena in Albany, New York, with “Box of Rain,” honoring Grateful Dead bassist and songwriter Phil Lesh, who died earlier that day at age 84. It was Phish’s first performance of the song, according to the band’s official LivePhish recording page.
How Phish paid tribute to Phil Lesh
The performance began the first night of Phish’s three-night run at MVP Arena, scheduled for October 25–27, 2024. Contemporary coverage described the opening song as a tribute to Lesh, who died on October 25 at 84. SPIN’s report covered the tribute, while LivePhish’s official listing identifies “Box of Rain” as the band’s debut of the song.
The choice had a direct connection to Lesh’s work. “Box of Rain” was co-written by Lesh and lyricist Robert Hunter, and appeared on the Grateful Dead’s 1970 album American Beauty. JamBase notes that it was among the few Dead songs on which Lesh sang lead. JamBase’s report on Phish’s cover details that songwriting and vocal connection.
Why “Box of Rain” was a fitting choice
Rather than choose only a general Grateful Dead reference, Phish opened with a song closely tied to Lesh as both a songwriter and a singer. The song’s place on American Beauty also connects the Albany performance to a defining period in the Dead’s recorded work.

JamBase attributed a tribute to Phish guitarist Trey Anastasio, who reflected on Lesh’s influence: “Phil was more than a revolutionary, groundbreaking bass player—he transformed how I thought about music as a teenager.” The report also recounts Anastasio’s memory of first playing with Lesh in 1999 and finding him kind and wonderful.
