Why did Scott Patterson leave Sullivan’s Crossing?
In a statement on March 5, 2026, Patterson said: “The creative differences were becoming untenable and I just sadly realized that the show was not something that I could agree to continue.” He framed the exit as his decision, rather than a case of the production moving on without him.
He addressed that impression directly: “It’s unfortunate that it is now being implied that they moved on from me/Sully when the fact is the complete opposite.” His statement gives his reason at a high level, but does not specify what the creative differences involved. The public accounts do not establish whether they concerned scripts, character direction, or another issue.
What did the showrunner say about Sully’s exit?
Creator, executive producer and showrunner Roma Roth told The Canadian Press she was surprised by Patterson’s comments. Her explanation focused on the story and the production’s conversations about his return: “So, we had to pick up on that storyline and we were in discussions with Scott to come back.”

Roth said season 4 picks up the day after Sully leaves for Ireland, while the story focuses on Maggie and Cal. She said she would welcome Patterson back, describing Sully as “a very important character in the show.” That expresses openness, not a confirmed return.
What happened to Sully in the story?
Patterson played Harry “Sully” Sullivan in the show’s first three seasons and did not return for season 4. His character’s departure was written into the story: season 3 sent Sully to Ireland with Helen Culver, played by Kate Vernon, as he moved toward a new romance after a difficult period managing his family campground.

Roth’s comments leave the possibility open: she said the production had been in discussions with Patterson about returning and that she would welcome him back. No return has been confirmed, and the character’s importance to the series is not a commitment to bring him back.
