What happened outside Valhalla
On the morning of May 17, 2024, police were directing traffic outside Valhalla Golf Club after a pedestrian had died nearby. Scheffler, in town to play in the PGA Championship, was arrested and charged with one felony and three misdemeanors, according to the Associated Press.
Arrest images, including a photograph of Scheffler in handcuffs and his jail mug shot, spread online. The incident remained in the news after Louisville police released video on May 23, as the AP later reported.
Why memes appeared so quickly
The striking contrast between a world-famous golfer and a routine-looking arrest image gave online users an immediate subject for jokes and reactions. The response was visible in golf-community discussion that same day. A pinned r/golf thread invited users: “Post any and all memes related to Scheffler’s arrest here.” That thread shows that meme-sharing reached one golf forum quickly; it does not establish how fans or the wider public as a whole felt, or how many people saw the memes.
What prosecutors decided
On May 29, 2024, Jefferson County Attorney Mike O’Connell asked a judge to dismiss all four charges. At the hearing, he said: “Based upon the totality of the evidence, my office cannot move forward in the prosecution of the charges filed against Mr. Scheffler.” The AP reported that O’Connell said the evidence corroborated Scheffler’s explanation of a misunderstanding and did not satisfy the elements of a criminal offense.

That was a dismissal, not a finding of guilt or a trial verdict. The PGA TOUR’s report also described the charges being dismissed.

Scheffler called the episode a “chaotic situation” and “a misunderstanding,” as reported by the PGA TOUR. After the charges were dismissed, he said in an Instagram post, as quoted by the AP: “I wish to put this incident behind me, and I hope (the officer) will do the same. Police officers have a difficult job and I hold them in high regard.”

Those are Scheffler’s descriptions of the encounter. Memes and social-media reactions are commentary, not evidence about what happened; the prosecutor’s stated basis for dismissal is a separate part of the record.
