Sarah Hyland’s Ex-Boyfriend Matt Prokop Wasn’t the Only Public Figure Subject to a Restraining Order

Sarah Hyland’s 2014 restraining-order case was not the only one involving a public figure. Here’s what was reported in three other cases—and what the orders do and do not prove.

Sarah Hyland was granted a temporary restraining order against her former boyfriend Matt Prokop in September 2014. Other reported cases involving public figures include orders sought by Brooke Mueller and Karrueche Tran, as well as a 2026 order protecting actor Sabrina Carpenter. These cases differed in who sought protection, what the orders covered and what was known about the underlying allegations; a civil protective order is not itself a criminal conviction.

What happened in Sarah Hyland’s case

The Los Angeles Times reported that Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Andrea C. Thompson granted Hyland a temporary restraining order against Prokop on September 19, 2014. The reported terms required him to stay 100 yards away from Hyland, her home, workplace and vehicle.

The allegations described at the time came from Hyland’s court filing, not from a criminal conviction or a finding that every claim had been proven. The Times reported that the filing alleged verbal and physical abuse, including that Prokop choked her during an argument. Hyland’s attorney, Lee Sherman, said, “The documents filed speak for themselves,” and asked that the parties’ privacy be respected.

In October 2014, E! reported that a judge granted a permanent restraining order. Its account described terms protecting Hyland and her dog, Barkley Bixby, including prohibitions on threats or harm to the dog. “Permanent” is E!’s description; the exact duration, operative terms and any later modifications should be confirmed against the signed order before being stated more precisely.

Other reported restraining-order cases involving public figures

People involved What was reported What the report does not establish
Brooke Mueller and Charlie Sheen, 2011 The Los Angeles Times reported that a judge issued a temporary restraining order after Mueller filed a declaration. The restrictions involved Mueller and the couple’s two youngest children. Claims about Sheen’s conduct should be attributed to Mueller’s filing. The report concerns a temporary order in a family context, not a criminal conviction.
Karrueche Tran and Chris Brown, 2017 UPI reported that a judge granted Tran a five-year restraining order against Brown, with stay-away and no-contact terms described as coming from court documents. The reported order and terms do not, on their own, establish that every allegation was adjudicated or that a criminal conviction resulted.
Sabrina Carpenter, 2026 The Associated Press reported on June 17, 2026, that a judge granted Carpenter a five-year restraining order against a man who repeatedly tried to enter her home. AP said the criminal investigation was ongoing and court records did not show charges at the time of its report. This was an order protecting a public figure from a man who is not described as a celebrity—not an order between two stars. The reported investigation status is specific to June 17, 2026.

How to read these cases accurately

A restraining order is a court order, but reports about one do not establish that every allegation in the filing was proven. Keep the procedural and evidentiary distinctions clear:

  • Identify who sought protection and who was subject to the order.
  • Distinguish a temporary order from a later or longer-term order, and state a duration only when the report supports it.
  • Describe the people, locations or contact covered only as the source reports them.
  • Attribute allegations to the person or filing that made them; do not recast them as established findings.
  • Keep criminal charges, an investigation and a conviction separate from the civil order. If status may have changed, give the date of the report.

Where to check Los Angeles court case information

The Los Angeles Superior Court’s case-search portal provides case-search functionality and lists restraining orders under family law. Its scope is Los Angeles County, not every California court, and a search does not guarantee that every filing or document is publicly available.
