Sarah Ferguson, the Duchess of York, returned to Wimbledon’s Royal Box on 30 June 2025, 37 years after her reported 1988 appearance there with Diana, Princess of Wales. Her daughter Princess Beatrice joined her to watch Carlos Alcaraz play Fabio Fognini on the opening day of the Championships.
What happened at Wimbledon?
Ferguson and Beatrice were pictured arriving at the Royal Box on Centre Court before the gentlemen’s singles first-round match between Alcaraz and Fognini. The match took place on Monday, 30 June 2025, the tournament’s opening day. Getty’s dated photo caption records their arrival.
What does “in 37 years” mean?
The phrase refers to Ferguson’s reported return to the Royal Box, not her first visit to Wimbledon since 1988. Parade reported that her earlier Royal Box appearance was in 1988, when she sat with Diana, Princess of Wales. The interval from 1988 to 2025 is 37 years. Ferguson was also photographed at Wimbledon in 2000, so saying she had not attended the tournament for 37 years would be inaccurate.
What is the Royal Box, and who is invited?
The Royal Box is a reserved section at the south end of Centre Court. Wimbledon’s official feature, published 1 July 2026, says it seats approximately 80 people and is reserved for members of the Royal Family and invited guests: Wimbledon’s description of the Royal Box. That 2026 description provides general context; it does not establish that every detail was the same at Ferguson’s 2025 appearance.

What is known about Ferguson’s reason for attending?
The event reporting establishes that Ferguson attended with Beatrice and watched Alcaraz play Fognini. It does not provide a direct statement from Ferguson about her motives or the invitation. No specific explanation should be inferred from the appearance alone.
