In a TIME interview with Editorial Director Lucy Feldman, published October 2, 2024, Feldman asked whether Carpenter had avoided the vilification Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera faced for incorporating sexuality into their work. Carpenter answered: “No, I definitely get that as well.”
She said social media can feel like an echo chamber: she may be seeing negative comments about herself that her friends do not see. Carpenter also named Madonna, Aguilera, Spears, Beyoncé, and Rihanna as artists who helped pave the way.
Why did she say “don’t come to the show”?
Carpenter was responding to opinions about how she dresses, not making a general statement about every person who criticizes her. She said, “But you’ll still get the occasional mother that has a strong opinion on how you should be dressing. And to that I just say, don’t come to the show and that’s OK.”

She went on to explain why comfort matters to her as a performer: “It’s unfortunate that it’s ever been something to criticize, because truthfully, the scariest thing in the world is getting up on a stage in front of that many people and having to perform as if it’s nothing.” She added, “If the one thing that helps you do that is the way you feel comfortable dressing, then that’s what you’ve got to do.”
