Sade’s “Young Lion” is widely described as a tender apology to her son, Izaak Adu, acknowledging pain and expressing regret. Released in October 2024 as part of the Transa: Selects EP, the song also sits within a larger Red Hot Organization project celebrating transgender people and raising awareness of trans rights.
Who is “Young Lion” about?
Contemporary coverage describes “Young Lion” as addressed or dedicated to Sade’s son, Izaak Adu, who is transgender. The Independent interprets the song as an apology that recognizes the possibility he felt alone. Its lyric “Forgive me, son / I should have known” is part of the song, not a separate interview statement by Sade. The Independent’s October 25, 2024, report and Billboard Canada’s coverage both frame the track as a tender apology to her son.
That interpretation should not be stretched into claims about private family history or Izaak’s response. The available coverage does not establish a first-person explanation from Sade of the song’s intention.
When did the song come out?
“Young Lion” was reported as released on October 25, 2024, as the first track on Transa: Selects, an EP drawing selections from the forthcoming Transa compilation. Billboard Canada identifies its place on the EP; The Independent reported the release date.

Why is it called Sade’s first song in six years?
The “first song in six years” description reflects one way October 2024 coverage counted Sade’s releases, not an uncontested measure of time away from recording. A September announcement by Resident Advisor called it her first official new song in 14 years and her first release since 2018, while noting two soundtrack songs released in 2018: “Flower of the Universe” and “The Big Unknown.” The descriptions use different categories and starting points, so the interval depends on what counts as a release.
How does “Young Lion” fit into the Transa project?
Sade’s official website describes Transa as a 46-track compilation by the Red Hot Organization, celebrating the trans community and raising awareness of trans rights. Billboard Canada describes Transa: Selects as a selection from that larger compilation. The project’s stated aims include encouraging thought about how transgender people are treated and imagining a future grounded in community, collaboration, care, and healing. Sade’s official news page announced the song’s video on November 27, 2024.
