Two days later, the complete Dave Meyers-directed video arrived alongside Carpenter’s album Short n’ Sweet, turning a rivalry over one man into a bloody, darkly comic showdown.
What happens in the “Taste” teaser with Jenna Ortega?
Carpenter shared the preview on social media on Wednesday, August 21, 2024. It introduced Ortega and hinted at a confrontation in a mansion, including a shower scene involving Ortega and a man. Rolling Stone’s August 22 report described the teaser’s sharp objects and its closing image of a knife used like a mirror. Rolling Stone’s report and GMA Integrated News’ August 22 coverage noted that the full video was set to follow on Friday, August 23.
When did the full video come out?
The complete “Taste” video debuted online on August 23, 2024, the same day as Short n’ Sweet. Dave Meyers directed it. ABC News’ account describes Carpenter and Ortega as rivals fighting over a boyfriend, played by Rohan Campbell. Their feud escalates through deliberately exaggerated, cinematic deaths before the women recognize that their ex was the problem.
How the video turns jealousy into dark comedy
The violence is part of a stylized fictional story, not evidence of a real conflict between Carpenter and Ortega. The video treats the rivalry as camp: danger and gruesome set pieces are pushed toward absurdity, while the central relationship shifts between affection, obsession, jealousy, and anger.

Carpenter described the tone as “a very open, light-hearted, brutal relationship between two women where it’s obvious how much they love each other and are obsessed with each other,” alongside “jealousy and anger.” ABC Rage’s feature published her explanation and her praise for Ortega and Meyers, saying the director helped bring the song to life in a way different from what she had imagined while writing it.

Carpenter named Robert Zemeckis’ 1992 dark comedy Death Becomes Her as an influence. She also said the video was inspired by one of her favorite films and that Ortega was a fan of it, according to TheWrap’s account of Carpenter’s Tonight Show appearance. Coverage also points to Psycho among the video’s film references. These are influences and visual echoes, not a claim that the video retells either film scene by scene.

Carpenter called “Taste” her favorite video she had made up to that point, TheWrap reported. She also said she was excited to work with Ortega and Meyers, whose direction made the finished video feel distinct from her initial idea for the song.
