Sabayang Pagbigkas was one of the activities featured in Philippine schools’ 2025 Buwan ng Wika celebrations, held under the theme “Paglinang sa Filipino at Katutubong Wika: Makasaysayan sa Pagkakaisa ng Bansa.” It was not a single nationwide contest with one set of rules: schedules, participants, texts, and mechanics depended on the school or organizing office.
What was the 2025 Buwan ng Wika theme?
The cited event documents give the theme as “Paglinang sa Filipino at Katutubong Wika: Makasaysayan sa Pagkakaisa ng Bansa.” The theme connects the cultivation of Filipino and Indigenous languages with history and national unity.
In its August 7, 2025 memorandum, DepEd National Capital Region described its office competition as a way to promote unity, camaraderie, and cultural appreciation among regional-office employees, while highlighting Filipino and local languages as part of national identity and cohesion. That stated purpose belongs to the NCR office event; it is not a measure of nationwide participation or impact. Read the DepEd NCR memorandum and mechanics.
Where Sabayang Pagbigkas fit into the celebration
Sabayang Pagbigkas—group spoken-word performance—was one activity within a broader Buwan ng Wika program. School celebrations could include other performances and activities, so the format and rules for one organizer should not be assumed to apply elsewhere.

Pasay City National Science High School
Pasay City National Science High School reported holding its closing program on September 3, 2025, following a celebration that included Sabayang Pagbigkas as a grade-level group performance. What the DepEd NCR personnel contest required
The August 2025 NCR mechanics provide a concrete example of one organizer’s format. These requirements apply to that personnel contest only; schools and student events may set different rules.
Rank #3
- Team size: 5–15 members.
- Performance: a common piece was specified for fairness and comparability, with a duration of 4–6 minutes.
- Timing: a 30-second ingress grace period was allowed. The mechanics specify a one-point deduction for every 10 seconds under or over the permitted performance time.
- Attire: coordinated attire or a simple costume appropriate to the piece was allowed.
- Props: optional; any props were to be minimal, non-hazardous, and quick to set up and pack away.
- Content: offensive or culturally insensitive material was prohibited.
How NCR judges scored performances
| Criterion | Weight |
|---|---|
| Mastery and voice projection | 25% |
| Synchronization and unity | 20% |
| Interpretation and clarity of message | 20% |
| Creativity and overall impact | 20% |
| Costume and stage presence | 15% |
These percentages are judging weights in the specific NCR contest, not statistics about participants or outcomes.
How to prepare for a school’s contest
Before choosing a piece or rehearsing to a particular format, get the current mechanics from the event organizer. Rules can differ even when events share the same celebration theme.

- Confirm the organizer and participants. Check whether the event is for students, employees, a particular grade level, or another group.
- Get the official schedule and rules. Verify the event date, registration or elimination dates, and performance time limit.
- Check team size and text requirements. Ask whether the group may choose its own piece, must use a prescribed text, or must perform a common selection.
- Read the language and judging criteria. Confirm any language requirements and how the rubric weights interpretation, diction, coordination, voice, movement, or other elements.
- Clarify attire and props. Do not assume costumes or props are required; confirm what is allowed and any safety restrictions.
The NCR memorandum’s hosted copy includes “Wika ng Bayan, Wika ng Pagkakaisa,” using the 2025 theme, and “Wikang Filipino sa Pambansang Kalayaan at Pagkakaisa,” identified there as a piece by Patrocinio Villafuerte. Because that copy is hosted on Scribd, confirm with the organizer that any attached text is the version intended for an upcoming event before rehearsing it.

A rubric uploaded to SlideShare in 2025 offers one example of a different scoring approach: interpretation and emphasis on the poem’s emotion, 40%; audience impact and performance elements such as character portrayal, posture, gestures, and movement, 20%; diction, articulation, emphasis, and intonation, 20%; voice and posture, 10%; and coherence of meaning and feeling, 10%. The upload is not evidence of a universal or nationally mandated rubric. View the uploaded rubric.
