The group argued that bright lights, loud noise and handling could frighten and distress a bird. That is PETA’s position; the available coverage does not establish what this particular dove experienced.
What happened during Sabrina Carpenter’s Grammys performance?
Carpenter performed “Manchild” on February 1, 2026, at the 68th Grammy Awards, held at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles. The airport-themed staging included choreographed dancers and a live dove, according to the Recording Academy’s event recap.
The Associated Press described baggage carousels and runway traffic wands as part of the set. At the end, Carpenter held the dove in a plane-fuselage set piece. The performance was one of the ceremony’s production numbers, not an animal-welfare demonstration.
Why did PETA object to the live bird?
PETA’s criticism focused on the bird’s presence in a loud, brightly lit live-show environment and on its handling. In a statement reproduced by ABC Audio, the organization said: “Bright lights, loud noise and handling cause fear and distress for a bird who belongs flying free in the open sky.”

PETA also called bringing a live bird onto the Grammys stage “stupid, slow, useless … and cruel!” Those phrases express the organization’s view, not an independently verified finding about the dove’s condition. The ABC Audio report identifies no individual speaker for the comments.
Is it established that the dove was harmed?
The coverage documents that a live dove appeared in the performance and reports PETA’s concerns, but it does not establish the animal’s specific experience. The sources do not identify the dove’s name, owner, handler, training, preparation, veterinary status, or condition during or after the show. It would therefore be inaccurate to state as fact that the bird was harmed or distressed.

Did Sabrina Carpenter respond to PETA?
ABC Audio reported on February 2, 2026, that it had contacted Carpenter’s representatives and that she had not responded at that time. That contemporaneous report does not establish whether Carpenter or her representatives commented later.

The ceremony took place February 1, 2026, at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles. In its pre-event announcement, the Recording Academy said CBS would air the show and Paramount+ would provide the telecast live and on demand for Premium subscribers; Essential subscribers could watch on demand the following day. That announcement describes the original broadcast arrangement, not current replay availability.
Carpenter entered the ceremony with six nominations, according to the Academy’s January 20 announcement: Record of the Year and Song of the Year for “Manchild”; Album of the Year and Best Pop Vocal Album for Man’s Best Friend; Best Pop Solo Performance for “Manchild”; and Best Music Video for “Manchild”.
