Bill Hader, Kristen Wiig and Fred Armisen reprise “The Californians” in an official SNL–Volkswagen video, “The Californians: Malibu Beach (in Partnership with Volkswagen).” Released February 14, 2025, the short reunion sends their characters on an adventure in Stuart’s new ID. Buzz.
Who appears in the commercial?
The official Saturday Night Live video description identifies the returning characters and performers: Bill Hader as Devin, Kristen Wiig as Karina, and Fred Armisen as Stuart. The sketch is a branded collaboration, rather than a new installment of a regular SNL episode.
Its official title is “The Californians: Malibu Beach (in Partnership with Volkswagen).” Stuart’s new Volkswagen ID. Buzz is central to the reunion: the SNL description says Devin and Karina go on an adventure with him in the vehicle.
When did it air, and why was it made?
Volkswagen of America announced the collaboration with NBCUniversal as part of SNL’s 50th-anniversary celebrations. The company said it was scheduled to air during the SNL50: The Homecoming Concert on Peacock on February 14, 2025. The official SNL video was also released that day. Those dates refer to the planned concert broadcast and the video release, respectively.

Volkswagen characterized the ID. Buzz as “Volkswagen’s all-electric reimagining of its classic Microbus.” That is the automaker’s description of the vehicle, not an independent assessment.
What is the California Fire Foundation connection?
Volkswagen said it pledged a monetary donation to the California Fire Foundation to support first responders and their families following California wildfires. The announcement does not give a donation amount. The SNL video description also points viewers to Volkswagen information about supporting firefighters and California communities; it does not establish that buying an ID. Buzz supports the foundation.
