Its early open-air bouts, staged on soft ground inside a bamboo-and-rope enclosure, drew international attention in 2024. A professional ring donated by wrestler Cody Rhodes arrived in February 2025, changing the setting without erasing the promotion’s grassroots beginnings.
What is Soft Ground Wrestling?
SGW combines wrestling matches with a training community for aspiring performers. The promotion is based around Mukono, Uganda. Its founder, Bumbash Daniel, told the Associated Press in 2024 that he wanted to build awareness of wrestling and become an ambassador for the sport in East Africa.
SGW describes its own mission as discovering and developing talent from Uganda and across Africa, with the goal of turning aspiring performers into professional wrestlers and entertainers. That is the organization’s stated ambition, not a measure of independently verified outcomes. SGW’s mission page also frames the project around training and empowerment.
How did SGW’s muddy matches attract attention?
In 2024, the Associated Press described an open-air wrestling area with a ring improvised from bamboo poles and rope, set over soft, muddy ground. The scene included an announcer, referee and spectators. The unusual setting, combined with the wrestlers’ ambitions and the promotion’s online match videos, helped the story travel beyond Uganda.

In February 2024, WrestleZone reported that SGW was uploading matches to YouTube and highlighted supportive remarks about the promotion from wrestlers Jordynne Grace and Will Ospreay. Cultaholic also interviewed founder Bumbash Daniel and U.S. ambassador Jake Rhodes that month about SGW’s origins and its effort to obtain a proper ring. Those early reports capture a particular moment in the promotion’s development, not necessarily its current facilities or schedule.
Who trained at SGW, and what challenges were reported?
The Associated Press reported about 100 trainees in 2024, including women aspiring to wrestle. This is a historical count, not a verified current enrollment figure. The report said trainees underwent months of preparation before entering the ring.

The same AP account raised practical concerns about injury risk, insurance and suitable facilities. It also reported that SGW was leasing a four-acre site for $250 per month at the time. That dated figure does not establish the promotion’s current lease or costs, and the available reporting does not show whether later facilities resolved the safety concerns.
What changed when the donated ring arrived?
WrestleZone reported in February 2025 that a professional ring donated by Cody Rhodes had arrived after transport delays. It marked a significant change from the bamboo-and-rope setup described in 2024 and gave the promotion a more conventional space for wrestling and training.

SGW’s own site indicates that the soft-ground arena remains part of its identity. The arrival of a professional ring therefore should not be treated as proof that the earlier setting disappeared, or that insurance, medical support or other facility needs were fully addressed.
What are SGW’s goals and partnerships?
SGW says it aims to develop talent, create opportunities for young people, improve facilities, establish a medical area, build international partnerships and operate sustainably. These are organizational goals. The promotion’s partnership page invites corporate, media, community, international and technical proposals; any partner or impact claims there should be understood as SGW-published statements unless independently confirmed.

The organization’s official site also makes claims about trainee numbers and audience reach, but those figures are self-reported and are not independently established by the cited coverage. They should not be confused with the AP’s 2024 estimate of about 100 trainees.

As of October 8, 2026, the official site’s event page still showed April and May 2026 dates as upcoming, although those dates had passed. Current events, ticket prices, training activity and enrollment therefore cannot be confirmed from those listings. SGW’s event page should be checked for updated information rather than treated as a reliable current calendar.
