You can choose a free morning at Coogee Beach Reserve or shape a visit to the City of Perth’s planned Langley Park and Riverside Drive event, which is set to include a returning Multicultural Zone and a light show over the Swan River. Coogee’s hours are listed; the City event’s detailed schedule is still to come.
What can I do on Australia Day in Perth?
There are five useful ways to plan the day, but they are not five separate events: Coogee is the coastal alternative, while the other four options are ways to experience the City of Perth gathering.
- Spend the morning at Coogee Beach Reserve. The City of Cockburn lists the free, family-friendly Coogee Beach Festival from 8am to midday on Tuesday 26 January. Its program includes music, activities for all ages and a free sausage sizzle while stocks last. Check the City of Cockburn’s Coogee Beach Festival listing.
- Head to the central riverfront. The City of Perth’s 2026/27 outline places its 2027 event at Langley Park and the Riverside Drive foreshore. Exact opening times and the final activity list have not yet been published. Check the City of Perth’s event outline for updates.
- Look for the Multicultural Zone. The City says the zone will return in 2027. The previous year’s program featured performances, stalls and arts-and-crafts activities, but those specific elements have not been confirmed for 2027.
- Choose activities to suit your budget. The City’s outline confirms a mix of free and paid activities, without yet identifying which activities fall into either category. Review the updated program before setting a budget or itinerary.
- Stay for the Swan River light show. The City plans to conclude its event with a light show over the river. The 2027 show time and format have not been published; the 2026 schedule should not be used to assume this year’s timing.
How the two event options compare
| Option | Location | Listed hours | Cost | What is confirmed |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Coogee Beach Festival | Coogee Beach Reserve | 8am–midday | Free | Music, activities for all ages and a sausage sizzle while stocks last |
| City of Perth event | Langley Park and Riverside Drive foreshore | Not yet stated for 2027 | Mix of free and paid activities; individual prices not yet stated | Multicultural Zone planned to return; event planned to end with a Swan River light show |
The Coogee details are from the City of Cockburn listing; the City event details are from the City of Perth outline. Coogee currently offers the clearest time commitment, while the City event has a broader program whose specifics remain pending.
What to know before you go
Coogee Beach Reserve
- Facilities listed include free parking, first aid, public toilets, a sunscreen station and a water refill station.
- The event is not dog-friendly.
- Consider bringing sunscreen for time outdoors; the listing confirms a sunscreen station is available.
Langley Park and Riverside Drive
- Wait for the current 2027 program to confirm opening times, activity details, ticket prices, travel advice and any road closures.
- The City’s 2026 event release advised attendees to plan around road closures, but its 2026 map and closure information do not establish arrangements for 2027. Use the current event travel information once published.
- A picnic zone appeared in the 2026 event information, but it has not been confirmed for 2027.

Australia Day means different things to different people
Australia Day is the name of the event, but participation and celebration are not universal. The National Australia Day Council notes that the date’s history has evolved and that it means different things to different people, while recognizing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ continuous culture. Its page says more than half of Australians participate, including by attending events or gathering with family and friends, and that over 16,000 new Australians become citizens on the day; neither figure is assigned a year on that page. Read the National Australia Day Council’s explanation of the day.
In a City of Perth release about the 2026 event, Lord Mayor Bruce Reynolds said: “Australia Day is a chance to gather in the heart of our city, enjoy a beautiful summer’s day by the river, and reflect on the many stories, cultures and shared values that shape our country.” That statement referred to the 2026 gathering, not the 2027 program.
