On February 6, 2025, the Supreme Court reportedly asked police to ensure that Discovery Communications India’s petitioners could use their office and faced no threats of physical harm while their case proceeded. The direction followed allegations of threats connected to the documentary series Cult of Fear: Asaram Bapu; it was an interim protective measure, not a court finding that threats occurred or who was responsible.

What did the Supreme Court direct police to do?

The Court issued notice to the Union government and the governments of Maharashtra, Karnataka, Haryana, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, West Bengal and Delhi. Pending further proceedings, it asked police authorities to ensure the petitioners could use the Discovery office and that no threats of physical harm were extended to them, according to NDTV/PTI’s February 6, 2025 report.

“Issue notice returnable in the week commencing March 3, 2025. In the meanwhile, we request the police authorities to ensure that the petitioner gets to use the office and no threats of physical harm are extended to the petitioners.”

This was an interim direction accompanying notice to the respondents. It did not amount to a final ruling on the petition’s allegations.

What prompted the petition?

Discovery Communications India officials, including Shashank Walia and others, approached the Court alleging threats after the release of Cult of Fear: Asaram Bapu. The petitioners’ account, as reported by NDTV/PTI and Scroll.in, said a group gathered outside the company’s Mumbai office on January 30, 2025. Scroll reported the petition’s estimate of around 10 to 15 people; that is an incident estimate, not an independently verified count.

Contemporaneous coverage also reported that Discovery asked employees to work from home for safety. These accounts describe what the petitioners alleged and what news reports said at the time; they are not findings by the Court about whether threats were made or who made them.

What is Cult of Fear: Asaram Bapu?

The series is the documentary at the center of the reported dispute. Scroll identified it as streaming on Discovery+. The case coverage discussed here concerns the petitioners’ request for protection; it does not establish a judicial assessment of the documentary’s accuracy or claims.

How long did the direction last?

The notice was returnable in the week commencing March 3, 2025. The reports cited here do not establish what happened procedurally after that return period or whether the interim protection was later changed. Free Law’s February 6, 2025 legal-news summary likewise describes the interim direction and notice, not an official court order.
