That renewed visibility is not evidence that its critical reputation has been broadly redeemed: Rotten Tomatoes’ displayed scores remain unfavorable, and no primary Netflix viewing totals or chart history establish how many people watched it or why.
What is The Captive about?
Directed by Atom Egoyan, The Captive stars Reynolds, Rosario Dawson and Scott Speedman. Its story begins when Matthew briefly leaves his truck outside a diner and returns to find his young daughter Cassandra missing. The disappearance strains his marriage to Tina; years later, detectives uncover online images suggesting Cassandra may still be alive. A24’s film page provides the synopsis and links to DVD and Blu-ray listings.
The Festival de Cannes lists the film as Captives (The Captive), a Canadian feature selected In Competition in 2014, with a runtime of 113 minutes. Cannes records 2013 as its production year; A24 identifies it as a 2014 film. Those dates describe different things, rather than conflicting release years. Cannes film record
Why is The Captive trending again?
A March 2026 Tom’s Guide report said the film had appeared on Netflix and entered the service’s Top 10. That supports a story of renewed attention, but it is secondary reporting, not a Netflix viewing record. No primary figure establishes an exact chart position, how long the film stayed there, total views, or what prompted people to watch.
Has the film’s reputation changed?
There is evidence of new attention, not a demonstrated broad critical reversal. When accessed in 2026, Rotten Tomatoes displayed a 28% Tomatometer from 53 critic reviews and a 32% Popcornmeter from more than 250 audience ratings. The site’s critics’ consensus calls the film “Wan and lugubrious” and an “atmospheric, beautifully filmed misfire.” These are changeable aggregates, not a complete account of the film’s reception. Rotten Tomatoes’ page also includes more appreciative contemporary responses: Stephen Romei of The Australian praised how Egoyan brings storylines together, while Tirdad Derakhshani of The Philadelphia Inquirer noted the film’s recurring themes of desire, death, memory and time.

Netflix availability depends on country and can change. The checked India and Canada catalog pages list the film but say it is not currently available in those countries. A Netflix Top 10 report in 2026 therefore should not be read as proof that the film is watchable on Netflix everywhere, or that it remains available now.
For the United States, JustWatch’s guide checked October 5, 2026 listed free ad-supported services, rental and purchase options, and Amazon DVD/Blu-ray purchase routes. This is a dated catalog snapshot, not a guarantee of current availability, stock or price. Check the US JustWatch listing and the services directly before choosing a way to watch. A24 also links to Amazon DVD and Blu-ray listings; confirm the edition and current listing details before buying.
