She handed in her recruit number after a demanding warehouse obstacle, saying exhaustion and doubts about her upper-body strength played a part. Later, she described the experience as exposing her self-criticism while also revealing resilience she had not expected.
Why did Melissa Tkautz leave SAS Australia?
In the episode, Tkautz was the first celebrity recruit to hand her number to the Directorial Staff (DS), the show’s instructors. The immediate challenge was climbing to and moving across a high warehouse structure. She said the recruits had already completed drills that morning and were physically exhausted. She also doubted she had the upper-body strength the obstacle demanded: “I just don’t have that physical upper strength that is required,” she told 7NEWS after leaving.
Her departure was a voluntary withdrawal, not a staff elimination. The same episode included two other departures, but for different reasons: Orpheus Pledger also withdrew voluntarily, while Michael Zerafa left on medical grounds after injuring his shoulder.
What did Melissa Tkautz say after leaving SAS Australia?
Tkautz later said she found it difficult to watch the interrogation footage back. She connected the filming period with lockdown and reflected on how far she felt she had come since then. She also discussed self-esteem and the pressure of being in the public eye, including how scrutiny and rejection could contribute to self-doubt.

In another 7NEWS interview, she said she wished she had explained those pressures more clearly at the time. She credited Chief Instructor Ant Middleton and the DS with supporting her and helping her brush off negative thoughts. “I’m very, very hard, I’m my own biggest critic,” she said.
What did Tkautz take from the experience?
Her reflections were not only about what she found difficult. Before the episode aired, she said she regretted attempting only part of the final task. She also came away with a more positive view of her own resilience: “This experience taught me that I have a lot more resilience than I thought,” Tkautz said in a 7NEWS interview.

No problem. Use the tactical glass-breaker pen for an urgent escape, flip on the LED headlamp to see in the dark, or wrap up in the thermal blanket to stay warm. It’s your 24/7 backup plan for life’s surprises.
That combination—regret about not trying more, alongside recognition of what she had learned—captures her account of the course. She did not describe leaving as proof that she lacked resilience; she said the experience helped her recognize more of it.
