In December 2018, Perth radio presenter Ryan Jon was unsure whether to continue looking for his birth mother. He had learned from his original birth certificate that she was alive and had remarried, and he worried that contacting her could disrupt her life or reveal his existence to a husband who might not know about him. The West Australian reported his uncertainty; it did not say that he had definitively ended the search.
Why Ryan Jon hesitated to make contact
Ryan’s concern was not that he no longer wanted to know his birth mother. It was that finding her might affect a life she had built without him. As The West Australian reported in December 2018, he said: “Since finding out she has re-married, I don’t know what to do.”
He also explained the possibility he was weighing: “Her husband might not know about me and she might be happy, and I don’t want to disturb that.” These were his thoughts at that point in the search, rather than a declaration that he had stopped looking or a settled decision about what to do next.
How the search had unfolded
He had already spoken publicly about hoping to find her
In a Mother’s Day video in 2017, Ryan thanked his birth mother and said he hoped to find her. The New Daily reported in May 2017 that more than four million people had shared the video. That was an outlet-reported share count, not a view count.

DNA testing led him to his biological father
By March 2018, reports said an Ancestry DNA test had helped Ryan locate his biological father in London. Ryan met his father and two half-brothers there. The West Australian’s December 2018 account said he had not yet met his birth mother.
Mediaweek reported in March 2018 that the Mother’s Day video had received over 200 million views. That later figure measures views, not shares, and is not directly comparable to The New Daily’s 2017 share figure.
What later reporting says about the outcome
A 2025 Australian Adoption Podcast episode listing says Ryan learned in November 2024 that his birth mother, Julie, had died, and describes an unexpected reunion with her family. This later account is the podcast listing’s summary; the reported details are not independently confirmed here by a transcript or direct statement. It also does not establish that Ryan’s 2018 hesitation caused the outcome.

The 2018 story captures a difficult moment: Ryan had information that his birth mother was alive and remarried, but did not know whether contact would be welcome or disruptive. His earlier search had also brought him to his biological father and two half-brothers. The later podcast listing describes a connection with his birth mother’s family after her death. These are distinct stages in the story, and the available accounts do not establish every step between them.
