From a breakthrough drama performance and a Civil War general to a laconic comedy narrator and an Oscar-nominated music drama, these ten parts show why he became one of Hollywood’s most recognizable character actors. This is an editorial selection, not an official or measured ranking: it weighs recognition, career significance, range, and the staying power of each role.
Sam Elliott’s 10 most iconic roles
-
The Sacketts (1979) — Tell Sackett
This television Western belongs near the start of any account of Elliott’s long relationship with the genre. As Tell Sackett, he helped establish the rugged, composed screen presence that would become a signature across later films and television.

Mask (1985) — Gar
Elliott’s supporting role in this drama marked a career breakthrough. Gar is a useful reminder that his path to recognition did not depend only on playing cowboys: the performance placed him in a contemporary story about a family navigating prejudice, illness, and independence.
-
Road House (1989) — Wade Garrett
As Wade Garrett, the seasoned bouncer and mentor to Patrick Swayze’s Dalton, Elliott brought an easy authority to an action movie rather than a Western. The role’s appeal lies in its contrast: he has the assurance of a veteran without needing to dominate every scene.

Gettysburg (1993) — General John Buford
Elliott played Union cavalry commander John Buford in this Civil War drama. His measured delivery and bearing suited a historical figure making consequential decisions under pressure, carrying the same quiet command associated with his Western roles into a different period and setting.
-
Tombstone (1993) — Virgil Earp
Among Elliott’s defining Western performances, Virgil Earp is a lawman caught in a violent conflict over how Tombstone will be governed. Elliott gives the character a firm, grounded presence, making the film an especially clear example of his fit with the genre.

-
The Big Lebowski (1998) — The Stranger
As The Stranger, Elliott narrates the Coen brothers’ comedy in a relaxed Western drawl. The part turns his familiar screen persona into the joke and the point of view at once: a genial observer who lends an oddball story the air of a tall tale.
-
We Were Soldiers (2002) — Sgt. Maj. Basil L. Plumley
Elliott played the veteran noncommissioned officer in this Vietnam War drama. Plumley’s bluntness and military bearing make the role a natural fit for Elliott’s authority, while its modern military setting extends his work beyond the frontier and the Civil War.

The Ranch (2016–2020) — Beau Bennett
In the Netflix family comedy, Elliott played Beau Bennett, a ranch patriarch whose stubbornness and dry humor shape life at home as much as life on the property. The part brings familiar rancher traits into a contemporary ensemble, with family tensions replacing the classic Western’s frontier conflict.
-
The Hero (2017) — Lee Hayden
Elliott leads this drama as Lee Hayden, an aging actor reckoning with his legacy and uncertain future. The role was written specifically for him, according to TIME’s 2017 interview with the actor. Elliott called the experience “bizarre” and “incredible,” particularly because the writer, Brett Haley, was much younger than he was.

A Star Is Born (2018) — Bobby Maine
As Bobby, the older brother and manager of Bradley Cooper’s Jackson Maine, Elliott gives the music drama one of its steadier emotional anchors. The role brought recognition beyond his Western identity: he received an Academy Award nomination for supporting actor for the performance.
What makes these roles defining
Elliott’s voice and Western drawl became closely associated with cowboy and rancher characters, but a list limited to those parts would miss much of his appeal. Mask marks an early dramatic breakthrough; Road House and The Big Lebowski show how his presence works in very different kinds of comedy and action; and A Star Is Born earned him an Academy Award nomination. The range is part of the story, not an exception to it.

The choices also span feature films and television, period pieces and contemporary stories, leading and supporting roles.
