San Juan-Habana was the group and creative project Puerto Rican musician Juan José Hernández described in a 2008 interview with People en Español. Its name joined San Juan and Havana, reflecting his aim to bring Puerto Rican and Cuban musical traditions together in danceable salsa. Hernández also described a live concept built around musicians playing multiple instruments at once.
What was San Juan-Habana?
In an interview published September 4, 2008, Hernández presented San Juan-Habana as the group he formed after years working as a backup singer and songwriter. He said he wanted to make danceable, tropical Caribbean music and establish a distinct identity for the project. The interview describes a six-person group: Hernández and five other musicians.
What does the name San Juan-Habana mean?
Hernández explained the name as a blend of San Juan, Puerto Rico, and Havana, Cuba. The pairing expressed the project’s cultural and musical connection across the two islands; he described it as an effort to create an identity and a different sound, not to claim the invention of a new genre. In the interview, he said the music was “something more refreshing” and suited to the group’s image.
How did Hernández describe the group’s sound?
Hernández situated the music within what he called hard salsa, while naming a broad range of influences. His list included Cuban son, Puerto Rican bomba and plena, trova, jazz, danzón, comparsa, and Indigenous music. He also cited La Fania, El Gran Combo, Rubén Blades, and Gilberto Santa Rosa as reference points. These are Hernández’s descriptions in the 2008 interview, rather than an independent analysis of the music.

Hernández said work began in April 2006 and that the album became a reality the following March—March 2008, given the interview’s September 2008 publication date.
