Russell Crowe said he broke both shin bones after jumping from a castle portcullis onto hard, uneven ground while filming Ridley Scott’s Robin Hood (2010). He said he kept working through weeks of difficulty walking and learned about the fractures roughly a decade later, when a doctor saw remnants on X-rays.

What happened during the Robin Hood stunt?

In a retrospective interview with People, reported by The Independent, Crowe described jumping from a castle portcullis and landing heels first on rock-hard, uneven ground. He said the ground should have been prepared with a buried pad, but the crew was rushing to get the shot before the fading light was gone.

“I jumped off a castle portcullis onto rock-hard uneven ground. We should have prepped the ground and buried a pad, but we were in a rush to get the shot done in the fading light,” Crowe said, as quoted by The Independent. The headline phrase “stunt went wrong” summarizes his account of the jump and landing surface; it does not establish a separate mechanical failure or an independently verified production-safety finding.

How long did Crowe keep filming?

Crowe said walking was difficult for several weeks and that the final month of filming was particularly tricky. He said he did not tell the production about the injury, took no time off, and continued working. “I never discussed the injury with production, never took a day off because of it, I just kept going to work,” he said, according to The Guardian.

He also described continuing without a cast, splints, or painkillers. That is his account of what he did, not medical advice or evidence that working through an unassessed injury is safe.

How did he find out about the fractures?

Crowe said he sought medical help about ten years later after experiencing unusual leg pain. According to The Independent’s account of the interview, X-rays showed remnants of fractures in both shin bones. He had not known the full extent of the injury while filming, and the reviewed reports do not include medical records or an independent clinical account confirming the original fractures.
