Russell Crowe’s “tinge of jealousy” comment about Gladiator II was a reflective remark about the younger man he was when he made Gladiator, and the career opportunities that film opened for him—not a review of the sequel. Speaking before its release, Crowe also joked about getting older and said he felt uncomfortable that a story about his dead character was continuing without his input.
What Russell Crowe said about Gladiator II
In a June 2024 interview on Kyle Meredith With…, Crowe discussed the then-upcoming sequel to Ridley Scott’s 2000 film. He said: “I’m slightly uncomfortable, the fact that they’re making another one, you know? Because of course, I’m dead, and I have no say in what gets done.”

Crowe added that he had heard some decisions about Maximus’s story that he questioned, while making clear that he did not see himself as entitled to intervene: “A couple of things that I’ve heard, I’m like, ‘No, no, no. That’s not in the moral journey of that particular character.’ But you know, I can’t say anything. That’s not my place. I’m six feet under. So we’ll see what that is like.”
His explanation for the jealousy was personal and retrospective: “I reflect back on the age I was when I made that film and all the things that came after it and the doors that particular movie opened for me.” He then described “a tinge – and this is just being purely honest – a tinge of melancholy, a tinge of jealousy. Because I remember when I had tendons.” The last line is a joke about his younger physical self, alongside the more serious nostalgia.

Why he felt jealous
Crowe’s words connect the feeling to remembering his age during the making of Gladiator and the opportunities that followed. The remark is not evidence that he resented the sequel’s existence or disliked its finished story. It mixes melancholy about time passing with a humorous aside about his physical condition.
His discomfort had a separate but related source: Maximus dies at the end of the original film, so Crowe said he had no say in how the character’s story might be handled afterward. He mentioned hearing choices he felt did not fit Maximus’s “moral journey,” but also said it was not his place to comment further.
Rank #2
- From legendary director Ridley Scott, Gladiator II continues the epic saga of power, intrigue, and vengeance set in Ancient Rome.
What the remark does—and does not—say about the sequel
The interview took place before Gladiator II was released. Crowe was speaking about what he had heard and about his own memories, not assessing the completed film. The sequel centers on Lucius, played by Paul Mescal, rather than Crowe’s Maximus. The comments therefore should not be presented as a post-release review or as a verdict on the sequel.
Ridley Scott’s Gladiator was released in 2000 and starred Crowe as Maximus. For context on the film itself, see Paramount’s official Gladiator page.
