Bonnie said Amber brought a more modern perspective, particularly from women’s viewpoints.
What Amber Tamblyn contributed
In People’s April 9, 2024 exclusive interview, Bonnie Tamblyn described Amber’s role this way: “Our daughter, Amber, is an author, and she edited a lot for us. And she brought a more modern perspective to it.” Bonnie added: “She brought to it a more contemporary sensibility, especially from the viewpoint of women. That’s really important.”
The account is the family’s description of Amber’s contribution; it does not provide a draft-by-draft comparison or specify which passages she edited. It also distinguishes editing from authorship: the event description presents Russ as the memoir’s author, and Russ’s official site identifies Sarah Tomlinson as co-author. The People report describes Amber as editing “a lot,” not as sole editor, co-author or ghostwriter.
What the memoir covers
Dancing on the Edge was released April 9, 2024. Amber announced its publication that day and said her father had worked on a memoir about his life in entertainment for roughly 25 years. Her post highlights stories connected to West Side Story, working with David Lynch on Twin Peaks, encounters with Elizabeth Taylor, Fred Astaire and Paul Newman, and Russ’s work as a fine artist in the 1960s amid the Semina culture movement.

Bethel Woods’ event description also points to Russ’s work with Robert Wise, David Lynch and Quentin Tarantino; teaching Elvis dance moves; attending school with Elizabeth Taylor; and friendships with Dennis Hopper and Neil Young. It mentions family and relationships as well. Those details are promotional description, not an independent critical assessment of the book.
Amber and Russ have worked together before
The People interview also recalls earlier shared projects: father and daughter danced together in a 1997 episode of General Hospital, and both had brief appearances in Quentin Tarantino’s 2012 film Django Unchained. The report says Russ mentored Amber and managed her for a time.
