What prompted Neves’s statement?
Reports published on September 11 and 12, 2025, identify a TV Guia cover as the immediate trigger. Antena 3 described its headline as saying Neves and Cardoso were united after Jota’s death and that the widow leaned on her best friend. The cover photograph was presented as appearing to show Neves and Cardoso kissing, though Antena 3 noted it may have captured a moment before an embrace or a kiss on the cheek. The photograph and headline prompted questions about their relationship, but neither proves a romantic relationship.
Antena 3’s September 12 report described the cover and reproduced more of Neves’s response. Noticias Caracol’s September 11 report also covered his objection and remarks about his marriage and support for the family.
What did Neves reportedly say?
Noticias Caracol reported that Neves criticized the choice of photograph, quoting him in Spanish: “La elección de esa imagen fue tan desafortunada como quienes decidieron publicarla” (“The choice of that image was as unfortunate as those who decided to publish it”).

Antena 3 attributed this statement to Neves about his marriage: “Mi mujer, Débora Lourenço, y yo llevamos juntos más de 11 años, felices, con una familia que me enorgullece, y en 11 años nunca nos hemos visto envueltos en ninguna polémica.” He also reportedly said: “Hemos dado lo mejor de nosotros para ayudar a Rute y a su familia de la mejor manera posible” (“We have done our best to help Rute and her family in the best way possible”). These are the Spanish versions printed by the outlets; the original social-media post was not independently verified.
What is known about his connection to Jota’s family?
Neves and Jota were friends and former teammates. In later interviews, Neves continued to speak about Jota and his grief, and said he and his wife remained supportive of Jota’s family. SPORT TV’s May 20, 2026, interview summary said Neves called Jota’s loss the most difficult moment of his life and described memories of his friend as a source of motivation. Later coverage also described Neves’s continued remembrance and contact with the family. NOS reported on July 2, 2026, that he still sent messages to Jota, while Mundo Deportivo’s July 15, 2026 interview coverage reported on his friendship with Jota and support for the family.

The documented news story is Neves’s reported objection to the magazine’s framing and his account of supporting Cardoso and her family. The coverage reviewed does not substantiate the implied romance.
