Why was Salma Hayek nervous to dance with the snake?
In From Dusk Till Dawn, Hayek plays Satanico Pandemonium, whose dance with a snake became one of the film’s best-known scenes. Hayek said snakes were her greatest fear, and she felt intimidated by the prospect of performing among professional dancers.

In a 2018 interview with W Magazine, Hayek recalled being told about a month before filming that she would have to dance with a snake. The prospect made the scene especially daunting because the animal’s movements could not be planned like a human dance partner’s.
Was Salma Hayek hypnotized for the scene?
Hayek said hypnosis and trance were part of how she prepared, but her descriptions do not show that someone hypnotized her on set. In a 2002 interview with SPLICEDwire, she said: “I had to go to hypnosis — it was months of preparation for that one dance!”

In later interviews, she described learning to put herself into a trance. Speaking to British GQ in 2023, she said: “I was praying I didn’t come out of the trance in the middle of [the dance].” Her accounts support a distinction between preparing through hypnosis and self-induced trance, and the narrower claim that an outside hypnotist hypnotized her during filming, which she did not establish in these interviews.
How was the snake dance filmed without choreography?
Hayek said the dance was improvised rather than choreographed. In a 2017 Yahoo Entertainment Role Recall interview, she explained: “And there was no choreography. It was improvised. Because you can’t choreograph a snake, we don’t know what she’s going to do!” The snake’s unpredictable behavior meant the performance could not be fixed in advance like a conventional dance routine.

What meaning did Hayek give the dance?
Hayek said she researched snakes and developed a personal interpretation of the performance. She described the snake as representing inner power in some cultures. That is her framing of the dance, not a universal meaning attributed to snakes.
Her account makes the scene a mix of fear, preparation, and improvisation: she had to perform with the animal she feared most, while relying on a trance technique and responding to movements no one could choreograph ahead of time.
