Ryan Bader plays MMA fighter Mark Coleman in Benny Safdie’s The Smashing Machine, his first acting role. He says the experience meant learning to make a fight look real without fighting as he would in a bout—and watching Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt prepare for their scenes. In a separate interview, Bader also described the story’s potential to reach people facing addiction or difficult relationships. The comments below come from WrestleZone’s September 30, 2025 interview, not from the separate TheSportster exclusive named in the original headline.
What Ryan Bader does in The Smashing Machine
Bader portrays Mark Coleman, the American MMA fighter, in Benny Safdie’s feature about fellow fighter Mark Kerr. The Los Angeles Times describes the role as Bader’s acting debut, as does a September 30, 2025 WrestleZone interview with Bill Pritchard and Manik Aftab. The Los Angeles Times review situates the film in Kerr’s story, including his struggle with painkiller addiction, and in the history of John Hyams’ 2002 HBO documentary, The Smashing Machine: The Life and Times of Extreme Fighter Mark Kerr.
The feature revisits material covered by that documentary. The Times critic Amy Nicholson argues that the new film closely recreates the earlier work’s period, visual style, and story, while criticizing its treatment of the characters’ psychology. That is one critic’s assessment, not a consensus. A24’s official film page provides the film’s synopsis and production credits.
Why movie fighting required Bader to relearn
Years of MMA experience gave Bader familiarity with fighting, but not with performing a fight for a camera. In the WrestleZone interview, he said he trained with the stunt coordinator for two weeks before filming and had to adapt to the controlled, collaborative demands of screen action.

“Obviously, I have the MMA background, but I had to relearn from the ground up. You can’t really hit these guys. We did two straight weeks before filming anything,” Bader said.
The distinction is practical: the action has to read as convincing while remaining coordinated with the other performers. Bader summed up the goal as, “I wanted to make it look real, but I understood the process.” His account describes the challenge as a change in technique and restraint, not a matter of simply transferring fight experience to a movie set.

What Bader observed from Johnson and Blunt
Bader said he learned by watching his co-stars prepare. He described observing Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt’s process and what they did before scenes, rather than focusing only on the physical performance.
“I was observing a lot—watching him and Emily and their process, how they prepare, what they do before scenes. That helped me a lot,” Bader said.

That observation mattered because acting asked him to work within a scene and a production process, not just execute a physical action. His remarks offer a small but concrete picture of how he approached his first film role: learn the choreography, watch experienced actors, and adjust to what the scene requires.
What Bader hopes viewers take from the story
Bader called the film “raw and gritty, not just another sports movie,” and said viewers should remember that it is a true story based closely on the documentary. He also expressed a personal hope that the story might resonate with people dealing with addiction or difficult relationships.

That is Bader’s stated hope for the film, not evidence that it has produced a particular effect for viewers. It connects his account of the project to the difficult experiences at its center, rather than treating the movie solely as a sports drama.
