The sighting did not establish why she was not wearing it. The case was later voluntarily dismissed, and McIlroy said the couple had resolved their differences.

Us Weekly reported that Stoll was seen without her wedding ring on May 16, 2024, shortly after news of McIlroy’s divorce filing. The report described an appearance; it did not establish Stoll’s reason for not wearing the ring or what she intended.
What happened with the divorce filing?
ESPN reported that McIlroy filed a divorce petition in Palm Beach County, Florida, on May 13, 2024. The petition reportedly described the marriage as “irretrievably broken” and sought shared parental custody and enforcement of a prenuptial agreement. ESPN said the reason for the filing was not immediately known. His manager, Sean O’Flaherty, confirmed the filing to ESPN on May 14.
The Associated Press reported O’Flaherty’s statement that the team wanted the difficult time to be handled respectfully and amicably. That statement did not explain the private circumstances behind the filing.

Why the later outcome changes the headline
On June 11–12, 2024, McIlroy said he and Stoll had resolved their differences. RTÉ reported that a notice of voluntary dismissal had been filed in Palm Beach County and that the case was listed as closed. McIlroy said, “We have resolved our differences and look forward to a new beginning.”
Because the reported filing was later dismissed, calling Stoll McIlroy’s “ex” would imply a completed divorce that this account does not establish. The reported ring sighting and the court filing belong to the initial stage of the story; the later dismissal is essential context.
