A January 2026 backstage report said WWE was considering a Cody Rhodes–Roman Reigns WWE Championship match somewhere that year, but did not establish that it would happen at WrestleMania 42. A later report described a creative change after Drew McIntyre won the Undisputed WWE Championship. At WrestleMania 42, Reigns instead defeated CM Punk for the World Heavyweight Championship, while Rhodes defended his title against Randy Orton.
What the January backstage update said
On January 7, 2026, WhatCulture reported that Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer had been told a WWE Championship match between Cody Rhodes and Roman Reigns was planned for some point in 2026. The report said it might not take place at WrestleMania 42, and quoted its account of Meltzer’s reporting as saying “the pair may be involved in other things at WrestleMania 42, with them instead locking horns for the WWE Title at another date at some point in 2026.” This was a reported possibility, not a WWE announcement. WhatCulture’s January 7 report also said Reigns was expected to appear on SmackDown “soon,” attributing that detail to Self Made Sessions.
How the reported plans changed
A January 13 follow-up by Wrestling Inc. relayed Meltzer’s account that WWE’s WrestleMania plans changed after the decision for Drew McIntyre to win the Undisputed WWE Championship. It said Rhodes–Reigns was probably no longer set for WrestleMania, while discussing other possible match configurations. Those were still reports about creative plans, not confirmation of a finalized card. Wrestling Inc.’s January 13 follow-up covered the reported shift.
What happened at WrestleMania 42
WrestleMania 42 took place over two nights at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas. The final outcomes differed from the early Rhodes–Reigns possibility:

| Match | Official outcome |
|---|---|
| Sunday main event: Roman Reigns vs. CM Punk | Reigns defeated Punk to win the World Heavyweight Championship. |
| Saturday main event: Cody Rhodes vs. Randy Orton | Rhodes retained the Undisputed WWE Championship. |
WWE’s April 22, 2026 event release confirms those results. It also reported 106,072 attendees across the two nights. WWE separately reported more than 1.3 billion social-platform views, up 18 percent from WrestleMania 41; that is a digital-views figure, not an attendance count or a count of unique viewers.
So, was Reigns set to face Rhodes at WrestleMania 42?
The January report described a possible Rhodes–Reigns WWE Championship match in 2026, but left WrestleMania timing uncertain. A later report said the plans likely changed following McIntyre’s title win. The official results show that Rhodes and Reigns did not meet in a WrestleMania 42 main event: Reigns faced Punk on Sunday, and Rhodes faced Orton on Saturday. WWE’s event announcement confirms the completed card and results, not the earlier backstage plans.
