The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame’s 2024 Performer class brought together three very different cases for rock’s reach: Cher’s reinvention across decades and genres, Dave Matthews Band’s collective musicianship and touring community, and Ozzy Osbourne’s heavy-metal frontman identity and melodic solo catalogue. The Hall’s category recognizes originality, impact and influence; that explains the institution’s choice, but it is not an independent critical ranking.

What the 2024 Performer induction recognizes

Cher, Dave Matthews Band and Ozzy Osbourne were all inducted in the Performer category in 2024. The ceremony page lists Performer separately from Musical Influence, Musical Excellence and the Ahmet Ertegun Award, so these three artists share a category, not a claim that their careers or contributions were alike. The Rock Hall’s 2024 induction page provides that institutional context.

For a review, the most useful comparison is not a single score but the kind of achievement each represents: a solo star repeatedly reshaping her sound and image; a band whose identity depends on interplay among musicians; and a singer whose stage persona and solo work extended a defining heavy-metal career.

Why was Cher inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame?

The Rock Hall’s account of Cher centers on reinvention. It traces her from 1960s folk-pop through solo rock and disco to electropop, presenting a career that repeatedly moved with—and helped embody—changes in popular music. “I Got You Babe,” “Gypsys, Tramps & Thieves,” “If I Could Turn Back Time,” “Believe” and “Woman’s World” are among the tracks the profile names as landmarks along that path. The Hall’s Cher profile is the source for this career framing and its selection of songs.

“Believe” makes the reinvention argument especially legible: the profile highlights its use of Auto-Tune as part of Cher’s electropop era. The point is not that one track alone explains an induction, but that her catalogue connects distinct eras and styles through a recognizable performer identity. The Hall profile also quotes Judas Priest singer Rob Halford describing Cher’s voice, image and humanitarianism as singular; that is an admiring characterization, not a neutral measure of musical influence.

Why was Dave Matthews Band inducted?

Dave Matthews Band’s case is fundamentally collective. The Hall profile emphasizes a blend of jazz, folk and offbeat melody, with improvisation and contributions such as violin and saxophone setting the group apart from a conventional guitar-led rock band. It also describes a grassroots audience that followed the group on tour, making the relationship between live performance and fan community central to the band’s story. The Hall’s Dave Matthews Band profile presents those elements as part of the group’s identity.

The profile notes an evolution toward more radio-friendly pop without suggesting that the band abandoned its adventurous qualities. That tension—accessible hooks alongside room for instrumental interplay—helps explain why the group’s achievement is best evaluated as an ensemble rather than as one frontperson’s catalogue. John Mayer’s praise of the band’s “advanced concepts in hookery” and Herb Powell’s description of its concerts as adventurous and communal appear in the Hall profile as endorsements, not independent proof of quality.

Why was Ozzy Osbourne inducted as a solo artist?

Ozzy Osbourne had already been inducted with Black Sabbath in 2006. His 2024 induction recognized a separate solo career, not a second induction for the same body of work. The Hall describes him as a heavy-metal co-pioneer who developed a more melodic metal sound beginning with Blizzard of Ozz. Its Ozzy Osbourne profile and 2024 ceremony program essay distinguish the solo achievement from his earlier band induction.

The Hall essay says that by 2020 Osbourne had sold 51 million albums in actual sales and streaming equivalents; it adds that the solo total combined with his Black Sabbath output surpassed 115 million units. Those are figures attributed to the Rock Hall’s 2024 essay, and the combined number includes both careers. They cannot support a like-for-like sales ranking against Cher or Dave Matthews Band because comparable, consistently defined figures are not established here.

Osbourne’s solo case also rests on more than numbers: his theatrical frontman persona and a melodic solo catalogue gave him a distinct identity beyond Black Sabbath. Jack Black’s line in the Hall profile calling him “the greatest frontman in the history of rock & roll” captures the scale of that admiration, but remains an attributed tribute rather than an objective verdict. Osbourne died in 2025, as noted in the current Hall profile.

How the three careers compare

Artist What distinguishes the Hall’s case Useful listening starting points named by the Hall
Cher Reinvention across folk-pop, rock, disco and electropop, with a sustained individual voice and image. “I Got You Babe,” “Gypsys, Tramps & Thieves,” “If I Could Turn Back Time,” “Believe” and “Woman’s World.”
Dave Matthews Band Ensemble interplay, jazz- and folk-influenced elements, improvisation, and a committed touring community. The Hall profile discusses the group’s catalogue and evolution; it does not establish a definitive consensus shortlist in the material cited here.
Ozzy Osbourne A solo identity and melodic heavy-metal catalogue extending a career that also includes Black Sabbath. Blizzard of Ozz, which the Hall identifies as the start of his solo career.

The comparison makes clear why an overall winner depends on the criterion. For range of stylistic reinvention, Cher has the strongest case. For group interplay and a participatory live culture, Dave Matthews Band is the distinct example. For the evolution of a heavy-metal frontman into a major solo performer, Osbourne is the relevant measure. These are judgments about different dimensions of achievement, not a universal hierarchy.

Verdict: three different definitions of rock impact

The Rock Hall’s 2024 class is most persuasive when read as a broad account of what a Performer can be. Cher’s longevity is bound up with stylistic transformation, Dave Matthews Band’s with the sound and community of an ensemble, and Osbourne’s with the force of a persona carried from Black Sabbath into solo metal. Which case resonates most depends on whether the listener values reinvention, collective musicianship or heavy-metal performance most.
