Robert De Niro narrated “Snapped,” a 30-second ad released by Joe Biden’s 2024 reelection campaign on May 24, 2024. The spot attacked Donald Trump’s presidential record and his bid to return to office, portraying him as out of control and motivated by revenge. The Guardian reported that the campaign planned national distribution; TIME independently confirmed the ad’s title, narrator and runtime.
What the ad said and showed
De Niro’s narration opened: “From midnight tweets, to drinking bleach, to teargassing citizens and staging a photo-op, we knew Trump was out of control when he was president, and then he lost the 2020 election and snapped.” The campaign spot then described Trump running again, “threatening to be a dictator, to terminate the constitution,” and wanting revenge. Biden’s voice closed with: “I’m Joe Biden and I approve this message.” These lines were the campaign’s political argument, not independent findings.

The Guardian described dramatic orchestral music and archival news images tied to Trump’s presidency and January 6, 2021, alongside campaign footage. TIME also reported that the video used imagery from Trump’s presidency, January 6 and the 2024 campaign.
Why the campaign used the “snapped” framing
CNN reported that Biden’s campaign saw the framing as a way to energize Democratic voters in the month before a planned debate. That is a reported campaign rationale, not evidence that the ad persuaded viewers or changed voting behavior.

How the ad differs from De Niro’s courthouse appearance
On May 28, four days after the ad’s reported release, De Niro appeared with two former police officers at a Biden campaign event outside the New York courthouse where Trump’s criminal hush-money trial was nearing closing arguments. The appearance was a separate campaign event. The Associated Press reported that Biden’s team, which had largely ignored the trial, used its media attention to redirect discussion toward Trump’s role in the January 6 Capitol attack and the stakes of the election.
At that event, Biden campaign communications director Michael Tyler told reporters: “We’re not here today because of what’s going on over there. We’re here today because you all are here.” Tyler was explaining the May 28 press event, not the earlier ad.
