Running is optional. Walking, yoga, cycling, strength training and other activities can count, and shorter sessions can be combined to reach the daily target.
What is the #3for31 challenge?
The challenge asks participants to move every day for 31 days, with a familiar target of 30 minutes of activity or three miles. In its December 2024 movement challenge, Good Morning America described the daily goal as 30 minutes or three miles; that collaboration focused on 30 minutes of activity each day.
Arzón first conceived the challenge in 2012, when her own goal was to run three miles daily. It later broadened into a more flexible movement commitment. Arzón told Shape that any month with 31 days can work, although December is the familiar setting.
These are challenge targets, not an independently tested fitness prescription or a guarantee of health results. The sources do not report measured completion rates or health outcomes for #3for31.

What activities count?
Running is not required. The challenge is designed to accommodate different kinds of movement, settings and schedules.
- Walking: take a brisk walk or walk the dog.
- Cardio and outdoor activities: run, cycle, hike, play tennis or pickleball.
- At-home or studio workouts: do yoga or strength training.
Arzón told Shape that participants can split the 30 minutes into two 15-minute walks, or complete one continuous session, such as treadmill exercise, yoga, cycling or strength training. Choose movement that fits your circumstances rather than treating the original running goal as a rule.

How to make the 31 days manageable
Arzón’s suggestions, shared in Good Morning America’s 2024 coverage, focus on making the habit easier to follow:
- Schedule it: block a realistic time for movement in your calendar.
- Track your progress: note each day you move; a journal is one optional way to do that.
- Invite accountability: tell friends or family about your goal, or ask someone to join you.
- Vary your activities: choose different forms of movement to help keep the routine enjoyable and avoid over-relying on one activity.
- Recognize small wins: celebrate consistency as you build the routine.
Arzón’s emphasis is on a sustainable habit rather than pushing hard for a short time. As she told Shape, “I care much more about what you’re willing to do consistently rather than flame out over intensity.”

Do you need equipment or a Peloton membership?
No special equipment or Peloton membership is described as a condition of participation. The activity examples include everyday options such as walking, as well as workouts that can be done in different settings. Peloton classes are one possible way to exercise, not a requirement.
A journal can help you record activity or reflect on progress, but it is also optional. Arzón’s official site presents fitness books and other lifestyle material; none is stated as necessary for #3for31.

Who should adapt the target?
The 30-minute or three-mile format is a general challenge goal, not individualized medical advice. People’s abilities, health and circumstances differ. If that target is unsuitable for you, adapt the activity and intensity to your needs; seek advice from a qualified health professional if you are uncertain about exercising safely.
Arzón describes the initiative as “a community-driven initiative designed to help people build consistent movement habits,” according to Good Morning America. Its defining feature is the daily commitment, not a single required workout.
