The “first VMAs in 20 years” framing is not supported by the available event history: Paramount and the Associated Press place his first VMA performance in 1999.

The official description establishes the songs performed, but the available sources do not provide enough detail to make claims about the staging or compare the musical arrangements with earlier performances.
Why the “20 years” description is misleading
Paramount and the Associated Press both date Martin’s first VMA performance to 1999. Paramount described his 2025 appearance as the 26th anniversary of that debut; that is the source’s phrasing, rather than a separately calculated interval. The evidence therefore does not establish that the 2025 appearance was his first VMA performance in 20 years.
#1 Best Overall
Martin’s 1999 VMA history also included a major awards night: Paramount says he was the first male Latin artist to win Best Pop Video and the overall top winner, with five awards. The 2025 appearance had a different distinction: Martin received the inaugural Latin Icon Award after performing, according to the Associated Press.

MTV’s official performance video is on YouTube. Spotify announced on September 25, 2026, that it had partnered with Paramount as the official music and video partner of the 2026 VMAs, with plans to bring VMA archive material and selected 2026 performance content to the platform. That announcement does not confirm that Martin’s 2025 medley is available on Spotify.
