The word “new” in the original title is now dated: the song arrived in 2024 and the album in 2025. Starr announced a subsequent album, Long Long Road, in March 2026; that is a later album cycle, not the release context for “Time On My Hands.” The 2026 announcement identifies that later project.
Who wrote and performed the song?
Paul Kennerly, Daniel Tashian, and T Bone Burnett are credited as the songwriters. Starr sings lead and plays drums. The official track credits also name Paul Franklin on pedal steel, Dennis Crouch on bass, Daniel Tashian on acoustic guitar, electric guitar, six-string bass, and piano, Andy Cata on piano, and David Mansfield for the string arrangement. The album’s official credits list the performers.

Why Starr made a country record
Starr has said that country music was a longtime love, but that he did not expect the song he requested from Burnett to be country. In the October 2024 announcement, he recalled: “I’ve always loved country music. And when I asked T Bone to write me a song, I didn’t even think at the time that it would be a country song – but of course it was, and it was so beautiful.”
In an Associated Press interview published November 15, 2024, Starr described Burnett’s song as “the most beautiful song I’ve heard in a long time” and said it led him to think, “I’m going to do a country piece.” Read the Associated Press interview. Burnett also praised Starr’s singing and playing in the official announcement.
