Richard Gere’s comment was about the gap between his public fame and his role at home: in a 2024 interview, he said his son Homer did not grasp how famous he was and found it difficult to watch Gere on screen because, to Homer, he was still simply his father. The headline’s age of 24 refers to Homer at the time of that report, not his age today.
What Richard Gere said about Homer and his fame
Gere made the remarks in an interview with Vanity Fair Spain, according to Us Weekly’s May 2024 report. Us Weekly reproduced Gere’s words in English: “He doesn’t understand it,” Gere said. “And it is also very difficult for him to see me on the screen because even if I play an extreme character, I am still his father and it is difficult for him to get into the story.”
That English wording is Us Weekly’s rendering of the interview, not a translation independently checked against the original Spanish-language page. The point Gere described was a father-son perspective: Homer saw the person he knew as his father, rather than only the actor playing a character. The remarks do not say that Homer rejected Gere or his work.
Why the headline says Homer was 24
Us Weekly described Homer as 24 in its 2024 coverage of the comments. That age belongs to the story’s timeframe. Later profiles identify him as 26: see Vogue’s August 2026 profile and EFE’s June 2026 career report. Those later accounts make clear that “24” should not be read as a current age.

Homer Gere’s move into acting
Gere’s earlier observation about his son’s difficulty watching him onscreen is one moment in a changing relationship to film and acting. Vogue’s 2026 profile describes Homer’s upbringing in Westchester with Gere and Carey Lowell, away from the Hollywood industry, and his gradual interest in student filmmaking and acting.
EFE reported in June 2026 that Homer had appeared in two episodes of Euphoria as Dylan Reid and was expected to star alongside Kaia Gerber in The Shards. The report also says Gere praised his son’s acting and joked that he could retire and pass him the baton. This later career context is separate from the 2024 comments: it does not change what Gere said then about how Homer saw him as a father.
