Rez Ball is a 2024 Netflix sports drama about the fictional Chuska Warriors, a high school basketball team trying to keep its championship hopes alive after losing its star player. The film draws on Navajo basketball culture, but it is not a true story about a specific team. Netflix’s Top 10 lookup supports searches by title, date, and country; the available results do not establish that Rez Ball is currently climbing the charts.
What is Rez Ball about?
The film follows the Chuska Warriors as they try to rally through a season after the loss of their star player. Netflix presents it as an underdog basketball story rooted in Native American culture. The team and its championship run are fictional.
Netflix Tudum’s film guide gives the release date as September 27, 2024. Netflix’s regional title listing identifies it as a 2024 film; availability and listing details can vary by country.
Is Rez Ball based on a true story?
Not as a specific team story. The Chuska Warriors are fictional, but the film draws on real reservation basketball culture and reporting about Navajo basketball. Netflix names Michael Powell’s nonfiction book Canyon Dreams: A Basketball Season on the Navajo Nation and earlier New York Times articles as inspirations. Powell’s book reports on a real Navajo basketball season; it is not a scene-by-scene account of the film’s plot. TIME’s account of the real stories behind the film also distinguishes those influences from the fictional narrative.

What is it like as a sports drama?
The Associated Press describes the movie as using a familiar underdog-sports structure while praising its emotional impact and basketball sequences. That is one critic’s view, not a consensus rating. The film’s particular point of interest is how the team story is placed within Native community and place, rather than treating basketball as a setting detached from that context. Readers choosing between it and a documentary may want to decide whether they want a fictional season-long arc or nonfiction reporting such as Canyon Dreams.
