His remarks instead describe a decision he has reconsidered over time: he once wanted to stop, later said he was not ready, and has spoken about wanting a healthy farewell. The idea that he will retire when wrestling no longer excites him captures one possible way to frame that decision, but the exact wording has not been verified as a direct quote.
Has Rey Mysterio announced when he will retire?
No confirmed date or timetable appears in these interviews. A WWE Now transcript reports Mysterio weighing how much time remains in his in-ring career, while saying his body did not feel ready and that he enjoyed his work. The transcript page’s publication date is unclear, so it cannot establish how recently he said this or serve as a dated update on his current plans. WWE Now transcript hosted by Pod.wave
That distinction matters: reflecting on retirement is not the same as announcing it. The available comments point to a decision shaped by physical readiness, enjoyment and the prospect of a satisfying farewell—not to a fixed schedule.
Did Mysterio say he would retire when wrestling stopped exciting him?
The exact phrase in the headline has not been verified as a verbatim quote. The June 25, 2024 episode page for his interview with Chris Van Vliet lists his career, retirement thoughts, mask and legacy among the topics, but the page does not establish that wording. It is safer to treat the excitement threshold as a summary or framing, not a quotation. Insight with Chris Van Vliet episode page

When did he seriously consider retiring?
During his feud with Samoa Joe
In remarks from WWE’s After the Bell, transcribed in a 2022 report, Mysterio recalled that he wanted to “hang up the mask and retire” while feuding with Samoa Joe. He said his son Dominik persuaded him to stay. Mysterio also recalled returning after stem-cell treatment feeling ready to work; that is his account of the experience, not independent medical evidence. 411mania’s 2022 report and transcription
What he wanted from a farewell
In a 2022 Uproxx interview, Mysterio described hoping for a healthy retirement and the chance to keep watching his son work after he was done. He said, “I don’t think I could ask for anything else as long as God gives me a good farewell, and I’m able to retire healthy and that I’m able to continue watching my son put into work for his old man after I’m done.” Uproxx’s 2022 interview

What do his comments suggest about the decision?
Mysterio’s remarks show changing thoughts, not a formal retirement plan. They point to three considerations without establishing a published decision rule:
- Physical readiness: He has spoken about wanting to finish in good health, and the undated WWE Now transcript says his body did not feel ready to stop.
- Enjoyment: The same transcript reports that he still enjoyed his work. That supports the idea that staying engaged matters to him, but it does not verify the headline’s wording as a quote.
- How he wants to leave: His Uproxx remarks emphasize a healthy farewell and staying connected to Dominik’s career.
These are interview themes, not promises about how long he will wrestle. Neither his past doubts nor the undated transcript establishes a retirement date.
