In Brenna Ehrlich’s Rolling Stone review, Turnstile’s *NEVER ENOUGH* is less a conventional song-by-song statement than a sequence of shifting sonic impressions. Ehrlich’s reading captures the album’s central tension: it keeps the force of the band’s hardcore foundation in view while moving through synths, cello, reflective passages and club-like momentum.
What “Inspired Hardcore Impressionism” means
“Inspired Hardcore Impressionism” is the framing of Ehrlich’s review, not the name of a separate Turnstile release. She describes the album as a collection of impressions rather than a tightly unified set of messages: “It’s not so much a collection of tracks, but impressions, aural vignettes that are more about a feeling than a message — a vibe that listeners can pursue at their leisure, like wandering through an echoing portrait hall.”

That metaphor points to an album whose identity comes from contrasts and transitions as much as from individual songs. The record’s excursions do not erase its hardcore base; instead, they make that foundation one element in a wider range of textures and pacing.
How the review traces the album’s range
The title track’s layered build
Ehrlich hears the title track gathering momentum through trippy synths, Pat McCrory’s ’80s-style guitar, Dev Hynes’s cello and Daniel Fang’s drums, before it transitions into “Sole.” The combination illustrates the review’s impressionistic approach: the focus is on how different sounds accumulate and carry the listener forward.

Hardcore force and delirium
“Dull,” which the review says was co-produced in part by A. G. Cook, is likened to the force of a boxing match. “Sunshower,” by contrast, is described as a moment of hardcore delirium. Both keep the album’s physical intensity in the foreground, even as other tracks take a more exploratory route.
A pause for reflection
“Ceiling” begins with a ticking clock and opens into a contemplative passage, according to Ehrlich. Its placement helps show why she describes the record as a sequence of vignettes: the album can change emotional temperature rather than sustain one level of attack throughout.
Club motion, then an airy close
Ehrlich characterizes “Seein’ Stars” as ’80s-tinged and club-like, noting additional vocals from Dev Hynes and Hayley Williams. She also points to “Birds” and closes her review on the airy quality of “Magic Man.” These details extend the album’s palette beyond straightforward hardcore without making genre labels the whole story.

Ehrlich’s interpretation will be most useful to readers interested in how a hardcore band can retain its intensity while making room for contrasting textures and moods. It offers a way into the album through transitions and atmosphere, not a claim that every listener will experience the record in the same way. The track descriptions are the reviewer’s critical perspective; they are not measurements of sound or a substitute for hearing the album yourself.
