The Associated Press describes it as a 90-minute release, and its length is part of the experience rather than a detail to overlook.
What is Ethel Cain’s Perverts like?
Perverts is an experimental second studio album built around duration, atmosphere and restraint. Apple Music describes Cain as having written and produced the project almost entirely herself, and frames it as a turn toward dark ambient. The result, as the Associated Press characterizes it, draws on post-industrial noise, glacial tempos, layered reverb, ritualistic vocal elements, and stretches of drone and silence.
Rather than moving quickly from verse to chorus, the album often asks the listener to remain inside a texture. Repetition and sparse passages can make the music feel suspended; abrasive sounds and ghostly vocals keep that stillness from becoming comfortable. The AP review reports a runtime of 90 minutes, giving that patient, demanding approach room to unfold.
How does the album use sound and structure?
Long forms instead of frequent release
Pitchfork describes the title track as a lengthy opening statement. That framing helps explain the album’s expectations: it does not offer a quick introduction followed by a familiar sequence of compact songs. Its extended forms and minimal movement make duration itself a central part of the listening experience.

Noise, drone and voice
The record’s industrial and ambient textures sit alongside vocals that critics describe as ghostly or ritualistic. These elements do not simply decorate a conventional song structure; they contribute to an atmosphere of distance, tension and disorientation. Silence and drone can be as consequential as a melodic passage.
What themes do critics hear in Perverts?
Pitchfork reads the album through a conflict among sexual release, church condemnation and self-loathing. This is a critical interpretation, not a confirmed statement of Cain’s intent. The interpretation resonates with the music’s uneasy pairing of intimacy and severity: desire is presented in a world where judgment and pain remain close at hand.

That tension does not reduce the album to a single narrative or explain every passage. Its sparse, abrasive construction leaves room for ambiguity, and its isolation is part of how the themes register rather than a plot that can be summarized beat by beat.
How does Perverts compare with Preacher’s Daughter?
| Aspect | Perverts | Preacher’s Daughter |
|---|---|---|
| Song form | Extended drones and sparse passages, as described by the AP and Pitchfork reviews. | More recognizable song structures; Apple Music provides the album listing but the cited sources do not specify a formal breakdown. |
| Texture | Dark ambient, post-industrial noise, layered reverb and ritualistic vocal elements. | A blend of folk, goth and ambient elements, as characterized in the supplied critical framing. |
| Accessibility | The AP calls it a more challenging and less conventionally song-shaped listen. | A more song-oriented point of comparison; the cited sources do not provide a measured accessibility rating. |
The comparison is useful mainly as a measure of form and texture. Cain’s wider storytelling context may remain relevant, but Perverts should not be treated as a retelling of the specific plot of Preacher’s Daughter.

Who is likely to connect with the album?
Perverts is best approached by listeners open to slow pacing, ambient and industrial sound, and music that withholds familiar melodic payoffs. Those looking for a conventional collection of concise, immediately accessible songs may find its extended passages difficult. Its challenge is also its point: the record makes discomfort and waiting part of its artistic vocabulary.
