In his May 31, 2025, Rolling Stone review, Rob Sheffield hears an introspective project seeking healing and beauty in darkness—not simply another bid for a hit like “Flowers.”
What is the artistic swerve?
Released May 30, 2025, through Columbia Records, Something Beautiful is Cyrus’s ninth studio album, according to Sony Music Canada. Cyrus and Shawn Everett produced the record. Rather than settle into one sound, it changes style from song to song, using that variety to frame a more inward-looking album.
Sheffield places the new record in a career marked by changes in direction, from Bangerz and the Flaming Lips collaboration Miley Cyrus & Her Dead Petz to Younger Now, Plastic Hearts and Endless Summer Vacation. His point is not that Cyrus has found a single definitive genre, but that she continues to move beyond familiar pop expectations.
As quoted by Sheffield, Cyrus described the project as “a concept album that’s an attempt to medicate somewhat of a sick culture through music.” That ambition gives the album’s shifts a connective idea: a search for something restorative, even when the music turns uneasy or noisy.

What does Something Beautiful sound like?
Sheffield’s song-by-song comparisons make the range clearer than a single genre label would. The following are his characterizations, not claims that the songs simply reproduce those reference points.
- “Walk of Fame” featuring Brittany Howard: Sheffield hears an electro pep talk about self-esteem, with disco gloss and a Giorgio Moroder touch.
- “Easy Lover” and “Golden Burning Sun”: He compares their relaxed feel to Fleetwood Mac.
- “End of the World”: His shorthand is ABBA-like Euro-pop.
- “Something Beautiful”: The title track moves from a soft neo-soul ballad toward distorted electronic noise.
- “More to Lose”: Sheffield describes an ’80s-style power ballad centered on a relationship ending.
- “Every Girl You’ve Ever Loved” featuring Naomi Campbell: His sentimental favorite is a playful disco track that, in his reading, expresses the album’s redemptive outlook.
The record’s musical company also reflects that breadth. Sony’s announcement confirms contributions from Brittany Howard, Maxx Morando and Michael Pollack. Sheffield additionally names Flea, Danielle Haim, Cole Haden, Jonathan Rado and Adam Granduciel among the musicians involved.

How does the Pink Floyd connection fit?
Cyrus, as quoted by Sheffield, framed the project in relation to The Wall: “The Wall, but with a better wardrobe and more glamorous and filled with pop culture.” The comparison points to a concept-driven visual and musical ambition, but Sheffield draws a distinction in outlook: where The Wall is associated with alienation, he hears Something Beautiful reaching toward affirmation and redemption.
Is there a film or visual companion?
Yes. Sony Music Canada announced that a full-length visual companion premiered at the Tribeca Festival on June 6, 2025. The label announcement credits Cyrus, Brendan Walter, Jacob Bixenman and Panos Cosmatos as directors. That premiere date documents the event; it does not establish where or whether the film can be watched now.
