In Nandini Ramnath’s sharply critical review, Aanand L Rai’s Hindi film Tere Iskh Mein mistakes obsessive, threatening behavior for romantic intensity. The film stars Dhanush and Kriti Sanon; Ramnath’s central objection is that its framing gives Shankar’s pursuit of Mukti more weight than the harm it causes her.

What is Tere Iskh Mein about?

Shankar and Mukti meet in college in Delhi. Mukti, a clinical psychology student, undertakes a research project involving Shankar, a student leader whose behavior she hopes to change. Ramnath questions both this premise and the film’s handling of the relationship that grows around it.

The review describes a story in which Shankar refuses to accept rejection, stalks Mukti, and responds to her boundaries with threats and self-destructive behavior. Ramnath argues that the film presents this conduct as evidence of consuming love rather than giving adequate attention to Mukti’s safety and autonomy.

Why does the review call the film’s intensity troubling?

Ramnath reads the film’s appeal to spiritual passion and “amour fou” as a way of validating Shankar’s obsession. In her account, the story repeatedly treats his feelings as the dramatic center while diminishing the consequences for Mukti. That is the review’s interpretation, not a claim about how every viewer will respond.

The review also connects the relationship to the characters’ differences in class and education. Ramnath criticizes the film’s handling of those differences alongside its treatment of consent and violence. She compares Shankar with Dhanush’s Kundan in Raanjhanaa, while arguing that the threats against Mukti in this film are more direct. She specifically notes that the liquid thrown at Mukti is not acid, but a threat; it should not be described as an acid attack.

What does the review praise?

Ramnath’s verdict is severe, but her response is not uniformly negative. She singles out Kriti Sanon’s commitment to Mukti’s changing arc, especially scenes in which Mukti asks Shankar to leave her alone. The review also acknowledges some lovely tunes in the soundtrack, composed by AR Rahman with lyrics by Irshad Kamil.

Verdict

For Ramnath, Tere Iskh Mein is a long, intense drama whose romantic framing cannot overcome its treatment of obsession, consent, and the person on the receiving end of that pursuit. The performances and a handful of songs offer points of appreciation, but they do not soften her central criticism.
