Released October 10, 2025, it turns inward: gothic-tinged, softly psychedelic pop shaped around questions of identity and love. Its strongest moments invite immersion; its weaker ones may feel familiar to listeners who know her band.
What is Melt?
Melt is a ten-track album released by Atlantic Records on October 10, 2025. It is Zardoya’s first album under the name Not for Radio, a project distinct from The Marías rather than a replacement for the band. Vogue describes Not for Radio as a parallel project and reports that The Marías are still together.
The distinction matters to the record’s point of view. In her Vogue interview, Zardoya described wanting to explore her musical identity outside the context of a relationship. “Post break-up, I had so many questions. Who am I as an individual after a seven-year relationship? Who am I without the context of a relationship? That led me to the question of who I am musically without the context of this relationship,” she said. That account offers a personal frame for the album, not a complete explanation of every song.
How does the album sound?
Atlantic characterizes the sound as gothic romanticism and baroque pop meeting digital textures, and calls the songs intimate psychedelic ballads. That language points to a record built more around atmosphere and emotional shading than sharp stylistic contrasts. Its catalog duration is 42:22, according to AllMusic.

Atmosphere over hard edges
The label’s track descriptions offer useful entry points: “My Turn” carries lush ’60s echoes; “Swan” moves through haunting synthscapes; and “Not the Only One” is framed as a dreamlike confession. These are not wholly separate worlds so much as different shades of the album’s romantic, hazy palette.
KXSC’s review singles out the ambience of “Puddles,” “Water On Your Nose,” and “Not the Only One,” and hears “Slip” as a quieter, more vocal-focused closer. Its response is not uniformly positive: the reviewer finds “My Turn,” “Magnet,” and “Swan” predictable and says some songs recall The Marías too closely. That is one critic’s assessment, but it identifies the central trade-off of the project: a recognizable atmosphere can be part of its appeal and also limit how distinct it feels.

- “Puddles”

- “Moment”
- “Back to You”
- “Swan”
- “Not the Only One”
- “Magnet”
- “Vueltas”

- “Slip”
What does Melt add beyond The Marías?
The clearest difference is the intended perspective: Not for Radio gives Zardoya room to investigate her musical identity as an individual, as she explained to Vogue. That does not mean the album abandons the sound associated with her band. KXSC’s criticism that some songs resemble The Marías is a reminder that a solo project can change the framing without necessarily creating a dramatic sonic break.

That tension makes Melt more interesting than a simple “new sound” story. The album’s intimate writing and layered production provide a setting for a more inward account, while its familiar textures may leave listeners wanting a sharper boundary between the solo project and the band.
How was the album made?
Atlantic’s release announcement says Melt was recorded in January 2025 at Flying Cloud Recordings in Upstate New York, with artist-producer Sam Evian and producer and instrumentalist Luca Buccellati. Vogue, however, describes a three-week writing and recording stay in February 2025. The accounts differ on the month, so the exact chronology is not clear from these sources.
AllMusic presents “Is love worth the pain?” as the guiding question Zardoya found while working alone in snowy Upstate New York. It is a fitting lens for the record’s romantic unease, though the album is better approached as a mood and point of view than as a sequence of answers.

As a review, Melt lands most convincingly when its atmosphere and vocal intimacy feel like a deliberate space for reflection. The reservation is equally clear: some of the same hazy textures that give the album cohesion can make it sound too close to Zardoya’s band, or predictable, to one independent reviewer. Whether that familiarity feels comforting or limiting will shape how much the record distinguishes itself for each listener.
