McDonald’s official history describes the McDonald brothers’ San Bernardino restaurant in a 1948–1955 segment; its company history separately says Ray Kroc discovered a small California burger restaurant in 1954. The company’s records offer a clearer trail for vintage Happy Meal toys than for any currently open retro-themed restaurant.
What does “retro McDonald’s restaurant” refer to?
The phrase may point to the early restaurants and the brand’s history, or to the characters, toys and promotions people associate with an older McDonald’s. McDonald’s official sources document both historical context and past toys. They do not establish that a particular retro-themed restaurant is open now, or that current merchandise recreates an old restaurant interior.
Where McDonald’s’ early restaurant history begins
McDonald’s corporate history presents the McDonald brothers’ San Bernardino restaurant within a segment labeled 1948–1955. That range is the date span used for the history segment; it should not be read as a precise opening date. Why vintage Happy Meal toys are part of the nostalgia
McDonald’s says the Happy Meal was first introduced nationally in the United States in June 1979. That is a US launch date, not evidence that the meal debuted worldwide at the same time. In an October 31, 2019 announcement, the company described a limited throwback promotion for the Happy Meal’s 40th anniversary. Its US lineup included 17 toys from different years, among them 1988 McNugget characters, a 1989 Hamburger Changeable, Grimace, Hamburglar and licensed toys. The promotion ran November 7–11, 2019, at participating restaurants while supplies lasted; it is a past offer, not a current one. The announcement said the limited Surprise Happy Meal would be available in more than 90 countries, also subject to participating restaurants, dates and supplies. In that announcement, then-CEO Steve Easterbrook said, “Since the Happy Meal was introduced on the menu, it quickly became synonymous with our brand,” a company promotional statement rather than an independent assessment.
Examples of vintage toys in McDonald’s records
The 2019 throwback list spans McDonald’s characters and licensed properties. McDonald’s archivist feature provides additional context on how some of the toys worked: McNugget Buddies had interchangeable accessories, including hats, hair and shoes, while the Hamburger and Dino box changeables adapted popular toy forms of their era.
