Resident Evil Requiem makes a compelling case for combining two familiar series modes: Grace Ashcroft’s vulnerable, resource-conscious survival horror and Leon S. Kennedy’s more forceful action. The contrast gives the campaign a clear rhythm, though its appeal rests more on bringing established strengths together than on reinventing the series.
What is Resident Evil Requiem?
Resident Evil Requiem is Capcom’s ninth mainline Resident Evil game, built with the company’s RE ENGINE and released on February 27, 2026. The survival-horror story returns to Raccoon City, following FBI analyst Grace Ashcroft and veteran agent Leon S. Kennedy as their investigations converge. Capcom lists the game for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC. Capcom’s announcement describes its place in the series, while its March 4, 2026 release announcement confirms platforms and reports more than five million units sold.

How Grace and Leon make the campaign work
Grace brings scarcity and vulnerability
Grace is an FBI intelligence analyst investigating deaths connected to the abandoned Wrenwood Hotel, where her mother was murdered. Her sections emphasize limited supplies, investigation, crafting, and the decision to fight or flee. The tension comes from weighing risk rather than assuming every encounter should end in a firefight.
Leon brings combat momentum
Leon, a seasoned agent investigating the latest deaths, has a more direct action-oriented toolkit: firearms, melee attacks, parries, enemy weapons, and equipment upgrades. His chapters change the pace and offer a different kind of pressure, centered on combat rather than Grace’s scarcity.

- Amazon Exclusive - 2 sided poster included in every game!
- Grace Ashcroft, an FBI intelligence analyst who is introverted and easily scared, representing a new type of character for the Resident Evil series. Grace will experience horror from the same perspective as the player as she learns to overcome her fears throughout the course of the story.
- For the first time ever in Resident Evil history, players will be able to freely switch between both first- and third-person perspectives throughout the game.
- An Anniversary to Remember: With March 2026 marking the Resident Evil series’ 30-year anniversary, Resident Evil Requiem marks its own milestone in the franchise.
- Pre-orders for Resident Evil Requiem are now open, with the bonus of Grace’s costume: Apocalypse. Please note that the picture weapon does not come with the costume, but it can be obtained in-game.
The distinction is purposeful, not just a switch between protagonists in cutscenes. Director Koshi Nakanishi told PlayStation Blog that actions in certain shared locations persist between their sections: enemies Grace kills and items she collects remain changed when Leon returns. That makes the pair’s connection mechanical as well as narrative, although the available description does not establish how often or how extensively those consequences occur.
Does the horror-and-action balance succeed?
The central question for the review is whether the two modes sharpen each other or make the campaign feel divided. Nakanishi’s explanation makes the intended effect clear: “In Resident Evil Requiem, however, Leon’s segments lean more into satisfying action, which allowed us to really push the horror in Grace’s sections.” He also described the campaign’s overall rhythm this way: “Overall, this game may be scarier than Resident Evil Village, but it alternates between tension and relief, so it isn’t a continuous, suffocating experience.”

That design gives the game a useful tension-and-release framework. Grace’s vulnerability can make danger feel consequential; Leon’s combat-heavy passages provide release without abandoning the broader story. The trade-off is tonal variation: players who want an uninterrupted stretch of claustrophobic survival horror may find the action breaks the spell, while players drawn to both sides of modern Resident Evil may appreciate the change of pace.
What published reviews say
Published reviews broadly support the central blend, while identifying limits in length and novelty. PC Gamer praises the combination of puzzles, horror, and action, and the decision to divide those elements between Grace and Leon. Its reviewer reports finishing in about ten hours; that is one reviewer’s run, not a guaranteed completion time or a reliable estimate for every play style.

Tom’s Guide likewise praises the contrast between the protagonists and the way the game combines strengths of recent mainline entries. Its caveat is that Requiem feels less innovative than its two immediate predecessors. Taken together, those judgments describe a synthesis-first sequel: its appeal is the interplay of established approaches, not necessarily a radical change to the series’ formula.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can you choose first- or third-person view?
Yes. The official PlayStation product page says both characters’ stories can be played in first or third person, and Nintendo’s official page also describes either perspective for Grace and Leon. Nakanishi said the team included the choice from the start after some players found first-person play difficult and third-person support in Village’s downloadable content helped those players. That is the director’s explanation of a play-style option, not a formal accessibility certification. The choice is useful if you prefer one view, or want to try a different perspective without choosing a different protagonist.
Who is Resident Evil Requiem for?
- Consider it if you enjoy both resource-limited survival horror and more assertive action, and want one story to alternate between them.
- Think twice if you want a single, consistent mode of play or judge a sequel chiefly by how much it changes the series’ established design.
- Check before buying: confirm the platform, edition, region, and physical or digital format on the retailer’s listing. Capcom lists PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC.
For franchise context, Capcom reported more than 183 million cumulative Resident Evil game sales as of December 31, 2025. The figure is for the series, not Requiem alone.
