While promoting You’re Cordially Invited with co-star Will Ferrell, Witherspoon recalled presenting an award to a “very serious, proper actress” she did not know particularly well. She said she thought the ceremony was like a roast and made jokes, including one about laser hair removal. The event, she recalled, was British, elegant and classy; she was embarrassed by how poorly the jokes landed.

Is the actress Kate Winslet?
That is a theory, not a confirmed answer. Witherspoon honored Winslet in a speech at the 2007 BAFTA/LA Cunard Britannia Awards, and the speech was associated with a laser-hair-removal joke. That resemblance is why coverage connected Winslet to the later anecdote; it does not establish that she was the woman Witherspoon meant.
