That personal connection distinguishes Fonda’s tribute from institutional remembrances focused on Redford’s role in shaping the film world around him.
Meryl Streep’s tribute recalled their work on Out of Africa
Streep also paid tribute after Redford’s death, as reported in contemporary coverage. Their screen partnership in Out of Africa gives that remembrance a direct connection to their shared work. The report’s account is the basis for the tribute; it should not be recast as a public speech or another format unless the report says so. The reported tributes and Redford’s filmography document the context.

Filmmakers and film organizations emphasized Redford’s independent-film legacy
Sundance Institute: a platform for independent voices
Sundance Institute remembered Redford as its founder and focused on his vision for giving independent storytellers a platform. Its remembrance said, “The loss of our founder and friend Robert Redford, leaves us bereft and grateful for his life’s work.” The institute’s account connects his legacy not only to individual films, but also to opportunities for creative voices. Sundance Institute’s remembrance also attributes this statement to Redford: “Storytellers broaden our minds: engage, provoke, inspire, and ultimately, connect us.”
Directors Guild of America: a showcase where independent film could thrive
The Directors Guild of America credited Redford’s stewardship of Sundance with advancing a showcase where independent film could thrive. Its emphasis was on the space and visibility that the festival helped create for filmmakers. The DGA’s statement offers a distinct, filmmaker-centered frame alongside Sundance Institute’s account of Redford’s founding vision.
