Insomnia is Robbie Robertson’s posthumously published memoir about his creative partnership with filmmaker Martin Scorsese. The Robbie Robertson estate describes it as a continuation of Testimony; Publishers Weekly frames its story around the years after The Band and the work to complete The Last Waltz.
What kind of memoir is Insomnia?
The estate presents Insomnia as the next part of Robertson’s memoir project, picking up where Testimony left off. Its central subject is not Robertson’s entire life, but his working relationship and friendship with Scorsese and a stretch of filmmaking shaped by their collaboration. The estate describes that partnership as spanning forty years and names late-night film sessions, Raging Bull and Killers of the Flower Moon among its touchstones. Robbie Robertson estate
That makes the book a focused companion to Testimony, rather than a comprehensive autobiography. The broad distinction supported by the available descriptions is one of emphasis: Testimony begins the memoir project, while Insomnia turns toward the Scorsese-era film work.
How does it connect to The Band and The Last Waltz?
Publishers Weekly’s August 18, 2025 review places the narrative in the period after The Band’s dissolution and describes Robertson and Scorsese’s effort to complete The Last Waltz, the film of The Band’s final concert. That is the reviewer’s account of the book’s narrative frame, not evidence that Insomnia is an independent history of the film. Publishers Weekly review and edition details

The estate’s description also connects the partnership to later work, including Raging Bull and Killers of the Flower Moon. Taken together, these descriptions suggest a memoir organized around creative collaboration across multiple films, with The Band’s final chapter providing part of its starting context.
What does the book help readers understand?
- Robertson’s memoir has a second part. The estate explicitly says Insomnia continues the project begun with Testimony.
- Scorsese is the book’s central creative counterpart. The estate emphasizes the pair’s long collaboration and selected films.
- The post-Band period matters to its narrative. Publishers Weekly specifically describes the effort to complete The Last Waltz as part of the book’s story.
- Its value is its focus, not its completeness. The book offers a concentrated account of one important relationship and period of work, not an all-encompassing life narrative.
